The Heuer Carrera - A Luxury Watch with a Sports Heritage

The Heuer luxury watch brand has been associated with the worlds most iconic motorsports teams. The Carrera brand was originally inspired by a road race and it has become an internationally recognized name synonymous with speed, passion and style. This is a wristwatch not just for the discerning collector but also for those who desire a fine mechanical wristwatch with a more sporty informal design.
The TAG Heuer luxury watch brand has an incredible portfolio of watches which link this brand with fast cars. Originally founded by the Heuer family in 1861, the brand had a reputation as a prestigious Swiss watch manufacturer with a passion for creating high precision chronographs. In 1958 Jack W. Heuer the great-grandson of the founder took charge of the company, a position he would hold for twenty years. In keeping with the precision accuracy heritage of the Heuer brand he oversaw the development in 1966 of the first compact electronic timekeeper with precision to one-thousandth of a second.

Jack W. Heuer was also the creator of the "Autavia" collection of Heuer watches. The name takes inspiration from two sectors of the brand’s business - the development of timing instruments for the "Auto" and the "Aviation" industries. Jack W. Heuer’s style of producing a named series continued with the iconic Carrera, first presented in 1964. Named after one of the most perilous motor races during the 1950’s - the Carrera Pan Americana.

The first Heuer Carrera wristwatches were well received by the watch industry both by discerning collectors and by those who desired a fine mechanical wristwatch with a more sporty informal design. The Carrera line became crucial to the viability of the Heuer brand and another innovative timepiece, the Carrera Date was released in 1966. This luxury wristwatch was highly functional because it was a watch, a stopwatch and calendar all in one.

The Carrera had taken its name from a car race and now Jack W. Heuer sought to forge the link between the brand and motorsport through sponsorship. Heuer watches were used as timekeeping instruments at events, in return for the positioning of the Heuer logo on the cars. Between 1962 and 1971 the Heuer luxury brand was associated with such motorsport teams as McLaren, BRM and March.

The Scuderia Ferrari team considered by many to be the pinnacle of all motorsport teams became an associate of the Heuer brand in 1971. In return for timekeeping accuracy and contract fees, this fruitful marriage meant that every Formula One driver in the Ferrari team wore the Heuer logo on their racing suits in every single F1 race between 1971 and 1979. One Heuer model released during this sponsorship association was the Heuer Monza.

This watch was the ultimate tribute to the links with the Ferrari team whose driver Niki Lauda won the Formula One World Championship in 1975. It had been eleven years since Ferrari had a World championship winning car and the final points Lauda needed to win were scored at the Italian Grand Prix - at the historic Monza track. Inspired by the shape of the original Carrera case the Heuer Monza is further proof of the incredible strength of the links of these two passionate worlds, that of luxury watches and the motorsport industry.
