"The Help" Has Good Weekend at Box Office Despite Hurricane
Hurricane Irene closed a number of theaters on the east coast over the weekend, but "The Help" kept chugging along and was the top grossing movie in that time span.
Typically, inclement weather would drive people indoors to malls and shopping complexes where movie theaters are common. Extreme heat in the summer, rain or cold in the fall or winter, any of these can boost movie ticket sales. But, sometimes, as was the case this past weekend, something as threatening as a hurricane can make something as seemingly frivolous as going to the movies something that is simply not on people's minds. Despite that, the popular film "The Help" hauled in $14.3 million over the weekend, good enough to keep it at number one.
The total take for the movie, which stars Emma Stone, has been $96.6 million thus far. Despite being at the top of the list, ticket sales were down dramatically over the weekend, with studio estimates indicating a 23% drop compared with the same timeframe last year. To give an indication of just what was going on, AMC theaters closed all of their venues in New York, Maryland, Washington DC, Virginia and Philadelphia. Other theaters followed suit, making it impossible to watch a movie even for those who did wish to brave the elements.
After "The Help" on the list of top films for the rain-soaked weekend were "Colombiana," with a $10.3 million box office take, "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark," at $8.6 million, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," also at $8.6 million," and "Our Idiot Brother," which did $6.5 million in ticket sales. As for the weekend's king of the mountain, "The Help" is poised to go over the $100 million mark in just its 4th weekend, making it quite the draw.
