The Heat...
First time writing a science fiction story, so try not be too harsh on me.
I could feel my heart pounding in my chest. The humid air was closing my lungs in. I was barely able to breathe, but I had to keep pushing forward. I trip over a huge root, and go rolling, "Come on Mayle, Come on!" I hear my brother, Ashland yell, as he runs over, and pulls me up, and runs off again. I limp after him. My lungs bursting for air. I hadn't heard their toe-curling wails in a while. But, that didn't mean they wasn't behind us. I stop for a second to catch a breath, when I hear a voice, "You won't make it, they're not far behind you. I would join them now, instead of letting them kill you. But, it is your choice...." I looked into the sky, "NEVER!" I yelled, and started running, I heard the wails start up again, I pull in a deep breath, and keep running, I could see Ashland in front of me, I run hard, trying to catch up to him.
I hear the voice again, but this time it was quieter, like it was more distant, saying, "I warned you......" Then, everything went eerie. All I could hear was the pounding of our feet, and the harsh intake of my breath. I stop, and look around, they wasn't anywhere to be seen.
"Ashland!" I yell, he stops and turns around, "What?" I sit on the ground, and try to catch my breath. My throat was sore from no water, and the intake of so much air. "I don't hear them, i don't see them, I wonder what happened?" He just stared at me, and we thought in silence. My mind kept wondering to that voice. I knew worse was to come, so we had to get ready........
Chap 1
So here's the story. My name is Mayle Bryant, I am 14 years old, with curly black hair, and green eyes. I'm 5 foot, and 6 inches tall, and I'm a Freshman at the Mitchellson High School. My brother, Ashland, was 18, and he was a Senior. He always took up for me, if anyone ever bothered me. Ashland had ruffled blonde hair, and blue eyes. He was almost 6 and a half feet tall, and was very muscular.
One day we were having a pep-rally when the principal poped up on the intercom, "ALL STUDENTS, ALL STUDENTS! REPORT TO THE GYM AND STAY THERE! WE'RE UNDER LOCK DOWN!" Ashland, had grabbed my hand, and we sat on the bottom bleecher. He walked over and asked the principal what was going on when he walked in. Mr.Maxwell, our principal had said, "Well, there are some kind of demons rampaging in the streets. Their bodies are made of fire, and they eat your flesh. The Military had sent a message to all schools saying to lock everything down." I had felt my heart stop beating, I could feel it, we were going to die. Ashland had sat beside of me and hugged me close as we sat in the dark gym. Mr.Maxwell, had set the alarm, which would go off if any of the demon things were able to break in.
We had learned many things about them. Like they were attracted to light, the smell of humans, and tin. They hated silver, wood, and wire. So yeah, we had a bad chance of winning against them. You hear the blood-hurtling screams of kids, adults, and families outside. It broke my heart, thinking about my 2 year-old baby sister, Andrea, and my mom and dad. We heard banging all around the auditorium. I started to shake, and Ashland held me closer. Then, an alarm went off. You could hear people screaming, and everyone started running around. "Come on Mayle, Come on!" Ashland yelled. When the alarm went off, all the doors opened. We ran out a back door that led into the woods, and never turned back.
That was three weeks ago. We weren't really sure where we were at, but everywhere we went, those things were there. We had gotten supplies from empty cabins in the woods. It was easier running around, and hiding in the woods because the demons hated the woods. Although, some still dared to go through them to chase us. Finally, we got to our hideout. Ashland kicked in the door, and jumped through the hole. I jumped in behind him, and moved as he shut and locked the door. When we wasn't hiding we stacked silver all around the hideout. I walked over and laid on the small sofa we both slept on. I was dead tired, and my throat hurt. I closed my eyes, and fell into a deep sleep.
