The Girl of the Moon - Part Three - Waking Up
Ok, I'm trying to make the chapters longer now. I posted the first chapter yesterday at midnight, and as of 7:45, today, it has about 100 views! Thank you to everyone who commented. Tom goes into the cave and makes an amazing discovery.
I just stared at the ceiling, tracing the patterns in the stone, not really focusing on anything. I felt like if I tried to concentrate my head would splatter all over the floor. A ring of blue light started to mess with me. Slowly it came into focus. At first I thought I was still dreaming, but after a while, I had to admit that it wasn't holes that were showing the sky. It looked like they were candles, only they didn't glow a normal red, orange, or yellow color. They burned a bright, clear blue, like the deep blue of the sky at noon. I turned around, thinking that was a mystery I would ask about later. Right now, I was going to figure out exactly where I was.
I tried to look around, to see who was near me, but every time I moved, I felt the burning again. My face scrunched up in pain, and I felt cool hands on my forehead. I opened my eyes and just looked around. My vision was still blurry, but I could make out that there were two people sitting beside me.
One was a girl with red hair. It wasn't the carroty orange or red blond color. It was literally the color of fire. It looked like there was a river of flames running down her back. The other was a boy, with deep blue eyes and the kind of black hair that has hints of blue and purple where the light hits it. He looked vaguely Middle Eastern.
The three of us were surrounded by a ring of people, all of them silent and solemn. Nobody was talking, no one moved, except us. The red-haired girl continued to feel my forehead, while the strange boy seemed to be looking for something down the hall.
I tried to sit up, ignoring the pain. The ring of people turned and looked at me in unison. It looked really creepy, the group of people moving together with a blank expression on their faces, like they had no thoughts of their own and were just obeying orders, like robots.
The sound of footsteps distracted their attention from me. I could tell it was two people, one of them fast and heavy, the other came less frequently, and sounded lighter, like the person was dancing their way here.
I leaned my head back on the ground and closed my eyes, just focusing on the hands of the fire girl and the footsteps of the strangers coming this way.
The footsteps sounded even closer, and a short man walked out. If I had been standing I would have been at least a head taller. As soon as our eyes met, the same brain-splitting pain as before came. My vision flickered and spots appeared before my eyes. The candles of the wall dominated my attention and as I slipped into unconsciousness they seemed to come alive. They writhed and danced with an almost hypnotic quality and the blue slowly started to leeched away, leaving a black, flickering flame that gave no light or warmth. Instead it seemed to rob you of warmth. My eyes latched on the candle until I felt like I'd never be warm again and I passed out.
I was trapped in a horror show with yelling and screaming and things being thrown at me. I saw a warm, yellow-white glow through the black nothingness on all sides. I started running toward it, but it was like running through waster. No matter how fast I moved my legs, I seemed to go the same speed. Slowly, the glowing circle got bigger, but it got even harder to keep going. The noise grew unbearably loud, and I started to feel like I was going backwards instead. I looked down and saw hands all over my arms and legs, but they weren't hands. They had no flesh and bone, no substance, just shadows, vapors in the darkness.
They had an almost purple skin color, but it was see-through, like it was made of a thin layer of mist or cloth. At the center of the misty skin were bones, but they weren't normal colors. They were black, blacker than anything, blacker than a moonless night or the depths of the ocean. If made the darkness surrounding me seem almost as bright as day and the glow was a blinding beacon, promising safety if I could just be rid of the hands, to walk a little farther. The shadow limbs pulled me away from the light, further and further away, until the light was but a distant memory and my world contracted to the hands and the darkness and my screams.
I woke up screaming for the hands for the hands to let me go, to bring me back to the beautiful circle of light. I opened my eyes, trying to rid my head of the images that kept popping back. There was no one around to witness my pathetic whining and screaming but a small blond-haired, blue-eyed girl right next to me.
She was I was awake and stood, holding out her hand.
"Come with me and let's get something to eat. Some people are waiting for you. You've been asleep for a while."
I stared at her hand, still not fully awake. I didn't know where I was, I had just passed out when I looked at some short guy, had a really crappy dream, and now some ransom girl was trying to get me to get up and meet some new people.
She seemed to get my reluctance to get up and quickly removed her hand from my face.
"I'm sorry, your head my still be hurting. It just doesn't make sense. There was no reason for you to pass out..."
Her voice trailed away, she wasn't talking to me anymore. She was lost in a world of her own musing.
She suddenly jerked her head, startling me again.
"Oh, was dreaming again? Sorry if it scared you. Here, let me help you."
The blond hurried to help me up. This time I didn't pull away. She was right, my head was starting to hurt now that I was free of sleep. She pulled me up slowly, and when I stood up, she was a little shorter than me, but still a little taller that the strange short guy.
"My name's Cora. What's yours?" she asked as we headed down the long hallway the mystery man came out. As we walked it seemed that the dizziness from my black-outs was fading. It was a relief to be able to think clearly and without pain.
"My name's Tom. Where am I?" I answered, looking around at the walls that seemed to go on forever. The flames on the candles were a normal (or really abnormal) blue again, but I shuddered when I remembered the black, soul-sucking fire from before.
The girl looked over at me and followed my gaze to the candles.
"Yea, the blue flames usually freak people out, but you just look a little... I don't know, happy, or relieved." She finished with a confused expression, but with an unspoken question in it.
"More relieved than anything. When that short guys came in the candles... changed. I'm relieved they're back to nor-"I stopped suddenly, not sure how to continue
She gave me a wry smile. "I know what you mean. It still freaks some people out. Oh, here we are!"
We had come to the end of the tunnel without knowing it. My eyes were used to the dim light of the cave so now the light outside the mouth of the tunnel hurt my eyes. The girl gave me an apologetic look
"I know it's bright, but if you hurry, you'll be inside soon.
She led me to the opening while I shielded my eyes with my hand. We stepped outside and the sight made me forget the pain of the sunlight.
Is this chapter long enough? I'm just making it up as I go along now. Ok, working on the next chapter. I think I'll put it up later today or tomorrow. Have a nice day Buzzle readers!
