The Girl He Let Slip Away

When you don't know who you are and you lurk in the back of the shadows blending in amongst the rest, it's hard to see what is truly in front of you. In the end, the pain of letting true love slip away is close to unbearable and you yourself slip into a pit of darkness that blinds you from seeing who you truly are anymore.
Hiding within these shadows,
alone and desperate,
he blends in among the rest
just trying to be normal,
just trying to be loved,
just trying to be wanted for once
instead of feeling lost and desolate.
Even those efforts which were his best
fell into the darkness of insecurity:
he reached his hand out to touch the light
and was pushed away
again,
again,
and again.
Look outside the window,
what do you see?
Those creatures, those memories
gazing back in and staring at the monster
created by your own self destructive personality
as the stars fade into the passing night?
Well that's what he sees.
An empty shell lost within,
a savage animal falling into sin,
a blackened soul
broken one too many times to be fixed,
asking where to start,
wondering what to feel,
wishing the dreams in his heart
would someday be real.
He wanders the barren wastelands of his mind
searching for the truth locked deep inside,
trying to discover, needing to know
who he really is as a person within.
Until then, he acts like those around him
and he fades into the passing of time,
becoming empty and broken
like a frozen shard of glass lying in the snow.
He fell in love once,
he felt complete once,
he knew who he was once
but through his own worries
his worst fears came real;
being so shy and coy, unable to speak around her
he let slip the love of his life from his hands
and watched his cold nightmares become reality.
God, so many mistakes,
so many things went wrong,
things he could have changed...
if only he had a single chance to take,
a chance to turn back the sands of time and change,
maybe,
just maybe
the girl which, unknown to herself, holds the key to his heart
would unlock his soul,
hold him tight,
love him like he loves her
and never let go.
Now forced to wear that mask,
acting fine and pretending to be whole,
he knows that he can only have her friendship
and the only thing that is truly right
is to hold on to that friendship
and never let her out of sight
because that's all he has left.
Those tears that he had shed
fall upon the soft ground
as he stares into the moonlight,
remembering everything in the past
and searching the sky for who he is.
Every drop that he has bled,
ever wish he has made in the night,
every scream, every cry
of her name in the pouring rain,
everything he ever did was never to last.
In the ashes of his wake,
he was never reborn...
People say that pain
fades overtime, that everything becomes better,
well it's somewhat true:
he was left with nothing but emptiness
even though he could never forget her.
Yet even being numb,
even being incomplete,
looking at the scars carved deep into his heart
that horrid pain still lingers until the end.
He still looks into the mirror,
a monster created by love's defeat,
just trying to discover who he really is inside
as he holds onto her as a friend.
He can never let go,
he can never let that true friendship slip
like he once let true love slip away,
he just can't.
And so each day
passes by and fades away,
and he's left with nothing else to say,
wondering which path is the way,
wondering who he is within.
Hiding within these shadows,
alone and desperate,
he blends in among the rest
just trying to be normal,
just trying to be loved,
just trying to be wanted for once
by the girl he let slip away.
