I heard soft knock on the door and stomach flipped, flopped at the thought that Jake had returned with my file.
"Come in," my voice wavered a bit.
When I saw who came in I was amazed, yet again. Jeb walked in with grace of a tiger and sat down in the chair that Jake once occupied. He looked at me intently searching my face for some sign. I could only imagine what though.
He sighed deeply and spoke, "How are you?"
"Fine... Jeb, what are you doing here?"
"Well, funny you should ask..." his voice trailed off and I knew something was up.
"Jeb, tell me what the hell is going on or I'll bust your ass when I'm out of here," threats normally work on people, but with Jeb it was like rain sliding down a window.
He gave me a dry look saying I could do better than that. I sighed in defeat, and sat there pondering what my next a tactic should be. We sat there for a whole five minutes before he gave a frustrated grunt and leaned back in the chair.
I turned my head to glare at him fiercely, and yet again it didn't work. He just there gazing back at me frustrated.
"If you're not going to tell anything I suggest you go get out before I call a doctor to come, and get you. My patients with this place is running out, and if you don't intend on helping me because, I know you know something, then go away," my voice was impatient and annoyed which only added more to meaning of my words.
"You are so hard-headed you know that. You tell Jake to go get your file and expect me to help out when he gets caught. My influence can only go so far, Rose. You of all people should know that!" His voice was exasperated.
I just stared at him dumbfounded. What the...how did he know? Jake and I were in private when we discussed this unless he was listening to us...Yep, he was listening. This got me angry. My hands grabbed the railing of the bed and griped it so hard that you could see the whiteness of the bone through my skin.
I could feel gentle fingers prying my hands from the railing, but there were using quite a lot of force.
"Whoa, there tiger we don't wanna have broken hand, do we." He voice gentle and soothing
I stared into his perfect hazel eyes, and got a bit mesmerized. Then a soothing, calmness swept over me, and I felt at peace. I felt like I was in a trance. Damn it, snap out of it Rose, you got this snap out of it! He was using his powers on me. Angels have special powers and most angels have some of the same ones. For example the mood changing, better hearing, listening, smelling, and sense of direction are the general powers angels have. Then they have one power that's specific to them and Jeb's however happens to be fighting.
I had to force myself to look away from him so the trance could break. I was not about to have him make me dopey when I need answers now.
"Damn it Jeb, I'm only gonna say this one more time. Tell me what you know, or get out," my voice was steely and irritated.
He sighed loudly, and I just kept staring at the wall.
"Alright, alright I'll tell you, but have to promise not scream, yell, or anything, and for Pete's sake look at me. I'm not medusa, who freaking turns you into stone when you look at her, and I promise I won't do it again."
"How do I know you won't do it again."
He chuckled slightly, "That's the beauty of it, you won't know. But all you can do right now is just trust me, and hope I won't do it again."
I called him a string of very, very, very bad words under my breath which I'm positive he heard because it only made him chuckle even more. I scowled and turned my head towards him. I figured that if he was going to do it again, and make me all dopey like I was on crack, I could just look at my file when Jake came.
"That's a good girl, now I can now see your beautiful eyes."
I just stared in comprehensively at him. Did he just say beautiful eyes? I think I'm dreaming. He blushed slightly when he realized what he said. Wait, he just blushed...no girl has ever made him blushed. I never ever, in the five years of knowing him, have I ever seen him blushed.
He cleared his throat and went back to business mode. I frowned at him .
"Ok, when they brought you in, I was already here undergoing some... tests, to see if I were eligible for some...experiment-"
"What experiment?" I asked quickly asked.
"Will you please let me finish for once, and then you can ask all the questions later."
"...Ok..." I said unsurely.
He just rolled his eyes and continued speaking, "As I said when you came in the doctors checked you, and apparently you had lost a lot blood. The doctors saw this as an opening to start something bigger. Some doctors were opposed of it because they wanted people to voluntarily do it, others didn't care and saw no harm. When-"
"WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?!" I pretty much screamed at him
His eyes flashed with annoyance and he screamed at me, "WELL IF YOU'LL FREAKING LET ME FINISH IT WILL ALL MAKE SENSE!"
I could tell I was making him angry, and if you get Jeb angry your dead meat. I remember one time, I was testing him to see how angry he could get, and it was the biggest mistake of my life. He made run 20 miles with only a rest after every 10 miles. After that I tried to stay on his good side.
I shrank back into the pillow of my bed and cursed myself for screaming like that. He kept on glaring at me for a few minutes, and I returned his glare with a steady gaze. Because one thing I learned is, never ever show that you are afraid.
He saw this as sign to keep talking, "When I saw that it was you they were going to do this too, I practically panicked, and my heart tightened. I thought I was going to die. I'm sorry Rose, I tried to stop them but I couldn't. It was too late; they already had my blood and were pumping it into you..."
His voice was barely a whisper and I had to strain myself to hear him. I froze. What the... Jeb's blood is in me... Why?. It's a taboo to even have humans, and angels to be together, let alone give each other blood. It was just wrong! My emotions were running high, and fear and shock swept through me. My fingers began to get cold, then my arms, and shoulders. I felt the coldness creep over me like snake. Soon, I felt warm hands shaking me breaking the bitter coldness away. Then a deep smooth voice was screaming at me to breathe, but I could find myself enough to suck in a breath.
I felt the shaking get harder and harder and the screaming becoming louder. I don't know how long I was kept on being shaken until a team of nurses came and took Jeb away.
I felt something over my mouth that started helping me breathe. The burning in my lungs went away when my breathing went back to normal. I felt tired, like someone had taken me and stretched me till I was miles long and froze me, then let me thaw out.
I kept slipping in and out of consciousness. At one point I heard two people hissing at each other beside my bed. One was my mother and the other was Jeb.
"How could you tell her Jeb! I knew this would happen if I told her, so I was going to tell her at the right time. It was stretch for me to even tell her the doctors were going to speak to the elders!" my mom nearly shouted at him
I could hear Jeb smooth voice trying to pacify her, but not working at all. "Shhh. You're going to wake her up. She had a right to know. Plus, she was so desperate for answers that she told Jake to knock out the doctor for Pete's Sake! I had to go stop and convince him that I was going to explain to her."
I could hear my mother sigh, "When she wake up she's going to have a million questions for you. I suggest you get some sleep for what's in store tomorrow because I'm certain she will give you ultimate hell for this."
I heard a first set of footsteps walk out then another set, and I was left alone to go back to the sweet peace of unconsciousness.
