The Fire Hazards That Put Every Home At Risk During The Winter

Learn how heating your home during the winter puts you and your family most at risk from fire. Become aware of proper fire safety equipment and alternate heating means that can keep your home safe from fire hazards.
As winter continues, families across the United States are seeking alternate ways of heating of their home, due to the high (and increasing) cost of home heating fuels and utilities. People are now beginning to use wood burning stoves, have more fires in their fireplace (using actual wood and manmade material wood) and they are also bringing space heaters out of attic storage or are purchasing comfortable new space heaters. Though these are excellent ways to save money and increase the family budget, these forms of heating pose significant fire hazards, and as a result, unfortunately homes and lives are lost due to accidents in relation to the loss of proper home fire safety preparation.

If you decide to seek alternate means of heating your home, there are things that should be considered and watched when you apply alternate forms of heating in your house. First, fires in the woodstove and fireplace are wonderful. They not only provide warmth, but they also provide a familial and comforting atmosphere, not to mention they simply add a scent of winter that is festive, yet relaxing at the same time. If you choose to employ such means of heating, there are a few things you will need to be conscious of. First, it is very important you keep your fireplace or woodstove chimney clean. Many fires occur due to breaks, holes, and buildup of creosote in the chimney. It is possible to clean it yourself, but it is dirty and somewhat time consuming. It also possible to hire a chimney cleaner, and you will know that they give your chimney the best care and cleaning that is possible.

Next, space heaters are simply easy. They are small, and they can be taken anywhere, moved anywhere, and placed almost anywhere. However, because of the flexibility and versatility of this form of heating, it also increases the risk of a fire. If a space heater is carelessly placed next to a stack of old, dry newspapers, the heat can actually work with the paper and start a fire when it gets too hot. When using a space heater, it important to keep it away from fabrics (curtains, clothes), upholstered furniture, paper (files, magazines, newspapers, books), and children or pet toys. Always remember to turn off and unplug a space heater whenever you exit the room for an extended period of time. Things often seem to happen when no one is there to stop it. Simply help reduce the risk by turning it off.

The winter is cold, and people often seek alternate means of heating their home. Fires in the fireplace and woodstove, as well as space heaters, are all popular choices when it comes to saving a little money on the cost of heating your house. However, employing such means of heating increases the risk of fire. Be aware of the hazards, and always keep a watchful eye on that fire in the fireplace or the space heater in the corner. Being aware and preparing your home with the right fire safety equipment is your best defense that will save your house, family, and money.
