The Fantasy Fever
Movies like The Lord of The Rings that trigger imagination are an attraction not only for youngsters but also for adults. We talk about the fantasy fever in this article.
The film industry was marked by the making of various fantasy films in the last decades of this century. Their epic magic dragged not only children, but also adults in front of the TVs. Movies such as Harry Potter, Narnia or The Lord of The Rings represent a keen interest for adults all over the world. The lord of the rings trilogy was made after the book entitled the same way written by the well-known philologist J.R.R Tolkien. The story is full of symbols and moral lessons, and maybe this is one of the reasons why so many people loved this fantasy movie and books.
The author started to write the book for children, but on his way of creating it he realized the story became way too profound and also too violent for children. The first book, The Fellowship of the Ring, introduces the main characters and also the places where the action will take place. The name of the movie represents the group who is responsible to take the ring back to the volcano where it was initially made, and drop it into the lava in order to destroy it. They proceed this way because Sauron, the dark lord, made that specific ring in order to conquer Middle earth and then destroy the mankind. The Fellowship consists out of Frodo, Pippin, Marry, Samwise, who are all hobbits, Aragorn, who is a man with royal blood, Legolas Greenleaf, the elf, Gimli and Boromir. They are supposed to escort Frodo to Mordor, where the volcano is. The fellowship is protected and advised by Gandalf, the sorcerer. The peace of the Shire and of the land of the elves is soon shaken by Sauron's dark powers and also by the magic of the ring, which attracts everything around Frodo to it. Because of this, Boromir dies and the others remain behind. Sam is the only one who follows Frodo because he promised it to Gandalf.
The second movie is called The Two Towers and it refers to the alliance between Sauron and Saruman, the sorcerer. Many wars take place between men and their enemies, which are under the command of Saruman. While Frodo, Sam and Gollum, an ex hobbit, advance to reach Mordor, the rest of the fellowship fights together with Theoden to protect the cities of Middle earth. At the end of the film, for the first time, the good wins an obvious battle against evil. The trees and the army of elves join men in their battle and they destroy the second tower, Saruman and a huge army of orcs.
The third and the last movie is entitled The Return of the King. The new king, Aragorn acknowledges his kingship and leads the final battle against the dark forces. Frodo and Sam also manage to reach the volcano and after hard times given by Gollum, they drop the ring in the hot lava. At that point, the big eye of Sauron is destroyed together with his armies and with other evil creatures. The hobbits return to the Shire, but Frodo, his uncle Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf and the elves go back to their immortal world.
The magic of the story and the attraction is represented by the violent battle between good and evil, between friendship and betrayal, between loyalty and commitment and hatred. People find in the plot an analogy to their life, taken and higher, deeper and more magic dimensions. It is also well-known that J.R.R Tolkien intended the epic fantasy to represent an analogy to the Christian life and the old battle between good and evil.
Watchers of the movie, as well as readers of the book learn that Samwise is a friend anyone desires to have and to be. He sticks to Frodo in most difficult times, he protects him, gives up his food and water for Frodo's sake, swims after him even though he does not known how to do it, he excuses Frodo when he behaves aggressively because of the ring, he gathers his last strength in order to carry Frodo when he could walk no more.
Another thing readers and watchers learn is that hard times build a strong character, that all evil in the end turns to good, that help always comes at the right time and that faith gives one strength to advance.
