The Evolution of Bingo Playing Tools

In the beginning the game of bingo was originally designed to be a form of lottery, the Italian Government introduced the game as a means to raise money for the country after the re-unification of Italy. It soon grew in popularity and eventually spread to the other countries of Europe, eventually being played by French noblemen and even being used by German schoolchildren for educational purposes.

Eventually the game was exported to America, where it was referred to as beano. In order to be able to re-used beano cards, a bean was placed over the number called, hence the name. After some time the beans were replaced, but only after the game was marketed by an American toy salesman who renamed the game bingo. The beans were replaced with cardboard chips. And I am sure that if you ever had a version of the game as a child you will recall the cardboard chips.

After cardboard chips to cover numbers, evolved a shutter type version of the bingo card, where a little shutter could be slid over the number as it was called. This still enabled the card to be used over again. With the advent of plastics and its easy availability came colourful plastic chips, eventually a magnetic wand was invented, this was put to use with magnetized plastic chips and was used so that the bingo player could clear their card more easily.

Land based bingo halls then started using cards and colourful dabbers to mark the numbers on the bingo card. Paper for tickets had become more widely available as we entered into the era of "all things being disposable". Land based bingo clubs still use cards and dabbers but the electronic version of the game is growing in popularity all over the world and now we have hand held electronic units that will also check the bingo ticket and auto-daub the numbers.

Of course it was inevitable that the game of bingo would evolve into the world of computers and now we have online bingo where big prizes can be won. There is no effort at all involved in playing online bingo; all you have to be able to do is have an understanding of the game. You don’t even really know how to use a computer that well. Online games make use of auto-daub features and you can settle down to a nice bingo game online and chat with your mates in the chat rooms.
