The Ethics Of Cosmetic Face Lifts

Is there an ethic behind face lift surgery? Is it pure vanity or is it part of your nature to want more and to improve ourselves?
The Ethics Of Cosmetic Face Lifts
We are always trying to achieve more. We want to look better, have more money, drive a better car, have a bigger house, be happier. This is ok. It is part of our nature to want more for us and others. This is why human beings have achieved so many wonderful things in so many different areas of life. Cosmetic surgery is just a new part of this game. It allows us to improve our look. But it is more than that. By changing our look we also can change the way we feel about ourselves. There is no doubt about the fact that a face lift surgery has the most impact on us than any other surgery.

A face lift has the potential not only to change the way we look. It could easily change our whole personality. People recognize other people primarily by their faces. Many people are not happy with their face. While cosmetic surgeries on other body parts are mainly about fat removal and body shaping, a face lift is not about fat but about looking younger, healthier, more successful, happier or even about looking like a totally different person. Is it vanity? Yes, of course. But it can not be reduced to just that. Is it crazy? Many people say yes. The idea of a surgery in the face where you can never be sure how you look afterwards can be frightening. But the number of face lift surgeries performed each year is steadily increasing.

Of course, some people are obsessed about their appearance so much that you can talk about a sickness already. With every new surgery they look more surreal. But cosmetic surgery is not about these people. It is about people that have experienced a huge improvement in their life quality after a surgery. No doubt that plastic surgery for cosmetic reasons is not for everybody. A face lift is a serious surgery and a lot of things can go wrong. Is it worth the risk? Is it worth the money? Lets not forget that this is a very personal question. Do we have the right to ask this question? Is it our business to tell somebody else what he or she wants to do with their face?

This surgery costs more than ten thousand Dollars. Aging is a natural process that we can not stop. But often age has nothing to do with it. Today we see celebrities in the twenties showing proudly their various cosmetic surgeries. It becomes more and more part of our culture. We want to improve ourselves wherever we can. Our society pushes us forwards. It is always a matter of getting something in exchange for your efforts. Cosmetic surgery and even face lifts have become widely popular and also very safe over the last years. The risks could be lowered, techniques and materials have been improved. There will always be a discussion about the ethics behind cosmetic surgery but the fact remains that more and more people are doing it every year.

Let's assume a face lift would be totally risk less and free for everyone. No risks, no costs. What do you believe would happen? I believe that almost everybody would do it simply because there is almost nobody who is 100% happy with the way they look. Where is the ethics now? In my opinion most of the discussion is about the risks and costs involved and not about the results it can bring.
