The Embers
When love's burning passion becomes it's funeral pyre.
Another day, another argument,
Another force ten gale of scorn,
Another compromise of bitumen,
To fuel the angry fires that burn
On the funeral pyre of a love deceased.
I watch you trying to stoke the flames
From the distance of a memory
That no longer holds my name.
Burn yourself in a pillar of fire
To destroy those ancient memories,
I'll scatter the ashes of love's dead desire
In memoriam to a love that was not meant to be.
You loved yourself so much more than me,
While your heart burned, mine froze with cold
From the darkest, blackest stormy sea,
In the deepest depths of my own soul.
And you try to rekindle the embers
Through your insincere apologies,
But I know those words won't be remembered,
While you return to your world of vanity,
As you try to turn me on to your lust,
The selfishness of your me! Me! Me!
I wish that you would spontaneously combust,
Just burn out and leave me be!
And I sink further into my melancholy mind
To sing a requiem to the dying flame
Extinguished by the stormy winds.
Only the ash and the smoke remains.
I watch you dissipate in their swirling clouds
And for the first time in years I feel relief,
And I feel the need to sink further down
Into my soul, away from you, away from all the grief.
Just leave me be with my thoughts,
I feel no pain as I watch you vaporize
In the misty smoke of the fiery fog,
I see no need for your words of compromise,
Your lips may move but I can't hear
A single syllable of spoken word.
An opaque memory of all the tears
Is slowly fading from my thoughts.
I can't explain the numbness felt,
I can't pin it down in simple words,
Only that as I watch your melt,
I feel that I'm freed from your curse,
The embers keep sparkling with the breeze,
To melt away like springtime snow,
With the thin ice beneath my feet.
To let me sink into my soul.
Another force ten gale of scorn,
Another compromise of bitumen,
To fuel the angry fires that burn
On the funeral pyre of a love deceased.
