The Doomshadow (Chapter 4)

Gareths secret Talent is discovered and The King sends him on the Quest with Dev and Kyra.
Night had fallen when Gareth was summoned to the king's tower. The heavy red door swung open and he was ushered in. Padraig turned and faced the dark-haired boy, meeting those dark brown eyes with his own.

'Gareth I think it's time you told me about your special talent' Padraig said folding his arms across his chest.

'Yes my lord, sorry my lord,' he stammered looking down at his feet. 'How did you know?' he finished looking up.

'I have my own Talent, to spot other Talents and let me tell you there are not many people born with a Talent anymore, that's why you stood out so much,' Padraig said kindly,
'What kind of Talents do other people have?' asked Gareth inquisitively.

'Well Dragon Knights are Fire Casters, Griffon Ridders are Wind Summoners and other people can have a number of other Talents such as Summoning, Communication, Sight, Shape Shifters, Magic Casters and many more; but a rare few are lucky enough to have two Talents,' he smiled fondly at the young man in front of him.

'Well I don't know what my Talent is called but sometimes I can see glimpses of things that have not happened yet,' he said unsure of what The Kings reaction would be. Padraig grinned, 'That's Sight my boy, it allows you to see into someone's life, even what has not happened yet.' Still grinning he explained how rare the Talent was. 'But you have another Talent I can feel it, but it feels it feels wrong somehow...' he said confused, his brow furrowed. Gareth turned and walked toward the window. He sighed,

'You won't harm them, will you? You see, they are my friends' he turned around again lifting his right hand up in front of him. Five shadowy shapes shimmered into view in front of him. The King drew a sharp breath,

'Shadow wolves, you have the rarest Talent that I know about. Element Summoning.' The wolves faded from view and Padraig shook his head.

'Look, my son Dev, is going to try to find the light crystals. I would like it if you went with him.' He said placing his hand on Gareth's shoulder. The boy stood searching Padraig's face, then grinning he said,

'You don't have to tell me twice my Lord and anyway its sounds like fun,' Padraig returned the smile and ushered him out.

'They leave tomorrow morning at first light, meet them in the courtyard, thank you Gareth'

The door closed behind him and he walked down the stairs, One of the wolves shimmered into view beside him. Gareth looked at it and grinned,

'Don't worry, we are going on an adventure' The wolf grinned up at him and ran down the stairs. Gareth chased after it, he slowed as he emerged into the courtyard. Around him the castle was empty, everyone asleep or resting in their homes.

-Home,- He thought. - I don't have a home. - He sighed and kicked a stone. It bounced across the cobblestone coming to rest before a statue. He looked up at the stone figure. -The famous Longstrider, protector of Terraurgen. I wish I could be like him.- He turned abruptly and made his way to the barracks.

The lamp burned low on the wall as he made his was silently inside. He walked past many beds, his fellow soldiers and guards sound asleep. He smiled as he came to his own bed, the shadow wolf looked up at him as if to say, 'What took you so long.' He grinned again and ruffled the shadow wolf fur. Gareth packed a rucksack with clothes and weapons. A while later when he was finished he slumped onto the bed next to the shadow wolf. It gave a wolfish grin and jumped onto the floor and wriggled under the bed.

Gareth pulled the covers over him and thought about what had happened. The castle had been plunged into lockdown. Later he had been summoned to the kings throne chamber and told about his Talents. Then the King had asked him to go on a quest with Prince Dev. As the day replayed in his head he fell into the warm arms of sleep.
