The Different Types of Jewelery

A short article giving advice on the different genres and types of jewelery.
There are many different genres of jewelery. There is the fashion costume jewelery made for high street shops which follows the most recent trends. This jewelery is not designed to be treasured of last a great length of time, but serves the purpose to last for a short period in which the fashion lasts. This jewelery is usually inexpensive, made from cheap non-precious materials such as plastic or resins and is ideal for women’s gifts or simply as a cheap finishing touch to an outfit.

There is then fine art jewelery which is designed to question and challenge. It acts almost as catwalk jewelery. Designs are often impractical and cannot actually be worn in day to day life, however push the boundaries and explore new material, scales, and can then be toned down into the more functional piece. fine art jewelery provides the opportunity to explore possible future ideas and is more ‘free’ it is not constricted to fit the demands to be worn. It can be its own art form.

Jewelery can also be crafted for sentimental purposes. For example wedding and engagement rings are crafted for the purpose to last an eternity and to become sentimental to the wearer. These pieces are more expensive and are crafted using precious metals such as gold, titanium or silver. Goldsmiths and links for example sell this high-class range of jewelery. It can be purchases for birthdays, anniversaries and Christmas and is expected to last. Sometimes the designs are traditional or contemporary.

Designer jewelery is another category, which can often become a collectors item. Designers tend to identify a unique style and trend and develop several collections from this. Designers sell their work at craft shows, galleries or through online shops. Contemporary jewelery explores new designs and mean to express ideas which might not have been expressed previously. Some jewelers specialize in selling silver jewelery only and do not use other materials, however other designers explore the use of many materials such as bronze, gold, silver, and titanium and often combine different materials in one piece.

Medical jewelery serves the purpose to inform others the wearer suffers from a medical condition, it is designed to be instantly recognizable and serves as a functional piece of jewelery rather than an aesthetically pleasing piece.

Jewelery is a wide market, there are several outlets where jeweler is sold, it is sold at varying prices from cheap costume jewelery to million pound diamond rings. All these different categories of jewelery serve a purpose to us all, we all have purchased cheaper costume jeweler, or opted for something for special for a certain occasion. The competition is stiff in the industry, there are many designers and makers and many outlets competing to sell new designs.
