The Different Between SEO and PPC

SEO and PPC are two of the most effective ways to attracting new visitors to your website. This article illustrates the differences between the two methods and weighs up the various pros and cons of each.
Computer geeks do like to use acronyms! If you have ever called a computer support line then you'll know the frustration when they tell you to mess about with your PCMCIA card or make sure your TCP/IP is set up properly!

Not only do you not know what they are, but you know that the smug teenager at the other end is sniggering at you too!

It's frustrating, but harmless.

However some companies like to use the complexity of the Internet and its various acronyms to confuse and mislead people to try and sell services to them.

One of our clients received an email recently promising discounted listings in Google's 'Premium links' section. For a start, there is no such thing a Premium Links on Google - what they were trying to sell were 'Sponsored Links' which appear at the side of the main organic search results.

The links that appear in this section are 'Pay Per Click (PPC)' links.

You can easily advertise here by creating an account with Google Adwords, choosing the keywords you want your advert to appear for - And then agreeing a cost that you are willing to pay if your link is clicked.

Generally, the links that appear on the right hand side of the search results are less popular than those links that appear in the search results.

The act of getting your website to appear in the search results for relevant searches is called 'Search Engine Optimization (SEO)'.

Each approach has its own benefits: PPC gives you an immediate, guaranteed page one ranking in the sponsored links but you have to pay a cost each time someone clicks the link. And when you stop paying, your link disappears.

SEO takes longer (especially if they keywords are competitive) but then when you do rank, it does not cost any extra money. You can also rank for hundreds or even thousands of keywords at little to no extra cost.

In each case, you must choose and monitor your keywords very carefully to ensure that you are getting the best results from your expenditure - a website marketing professional will be able to assist you with this.

You might choose to go with PPC or SEO (or both!) You can either do it yourself or employ the services of a professional SEO or PPC company.

But you should always choose an SEO company that is recommended to you. If you receive an email offering guaranteed Google listings or premium Google listings, just delete it!
