I caught my breath, and my heartbeat instantly sped up and lost control, pumping unevenly and shamefully loud to my ears. I felt like someone had doused me in cold water, only it felt freezing cold for a millisecond before slowly heating up, making its way down my body. A slight shiver shot up my legs, and the junction between my legs heated up. I was excited.

And Zane could smell it, too. He drew in a deep breath, his body becoming stiff, tense. His body pressed mine against the counter, and he bent his head to my ear, ‘Do it,’ he whispered roughly, and the friction between our two bodies was an almost unbearable pleasure. ‘Kiss me.’

I looked up into his eyes, his beautiful, beautiful green eyes, and couldn’t help but fall into their emerald depths.

Zane leaned forward to me again, until his face was just millimetres away from mine. ‘Do it,’ his minty breath blew into my face and I closed my eyes against the feeling. I didn’t know what was happening to me. It’s like I was falling, falling somewhere completely new and different, but wonderful all the same.

So I did what I wanted to do – yes, what I wanted to. I leaned up to him so that I was on tip-toes, and softly pressed my lips to his. I never expected to feel so…complete, so ecstatic, as if I had lived for that moment. As his lips moved against mine, soft moans escaping both of our lips, we kept our eyes open, and it was like I could see everything inside him, past what he let people see and right into his soul. I was so close to him that the gold rings around his eyes was startling in its boldness. And then the heat of the passion became too much, and my eyes drifted closed.

Touching Zane was like touching burning hot silk. I clutched at his shouldered, my hands making their way up to his face, while his arms were wrapped tightly around my waist, and his tongue probed my lips, demanding entrance. I accepted, and opened my mouth.

‘Zane,’ I moaned as his tongue stroked mine. ‘Zane.’ Because Zane was all I wanted at that moment, anything and everything I had previously dreamed of, the core of my wanting.

Somewhere in the mix, Zane hoisted me up onto the counter, and my breathing was so erratic that I had to life my head for a moment to recover my breathing, but that did not discourage Zane; He just moved his lips to my neck instead, soft, wild purrs of pleasure rumbling deep within him.

‘Oh, Zane,’ I groaned, my hands clutching at his lustrous strands of hair. ‘I want…I want…’

‘What do you want?’ His lips, pressed to my ear, moved sensuously against the lobe as he said those four words.

‘I want…I want…’ I breathed, and closed my eyes, the passion and heat of it all really getting to me. ‘I want more.’

For a moment, everything stood on end, and Zane’s still as stone body against mine was uncomfortably apparent. And then he shifted, his body brushing against mine in a way that seemed almost purposeful, and his gaze met mine, those beautiful, intense green eyes staring straight into my soul. Then he did something unexpected. His arms wrapped tenderly around me, and he pulled me into his chest. ‘Colie,’ he murmured, stroking my hair softly, gently. ‘Colie.’

I hesitantly wrapped my arms around his neck and smiled up at him shyly, and he gave me one of those crooked smirks that made my heart melt. And then my smile fell as I remembered Vincent. Oh, no. This was wrong. All of it – it was all wrong.

‘Colie?’ Zane’s concerned tone of voice broke through my guilt. ‘What’s wrong?’

I looked up at him, and I’m sure he saw everything I was feeling in my eyes, because his face hardened, and I saw something flash in his emerald depths – pain?

And then his lips were on mine again, punishingly hard but soft at the same time, and I was responding, and he had a hand in my hair, keeping my face close to his, and all I could taste was Zane, and all I could hear was Zane, and all I could see was Zane, and I liked it, I loved it, and I wanted more, more, and his lips against mine had become slow, and…

‘Colie,’ he murmured against my swollen lips. ‘You’re mine.’ And the bad thing was, the idea of being his didn’t even repulse me.

-------------------------

My head, not for the first time, was in a complete, and utter muddle. I was such a bad person! I had cheated on Vincent! And I don’t know if vampires even have a chance of going to heaven, but I was pretty sure that neither the wife nor the husband was supposed to cheat on each other. And that only increased my guilt because I knew that Vincent would never do such a terrible thing as to cheat on me.

After much more wallowing in self-pity on my part, I decided that I would go to bed. But then I realised something: I didn’t have any pyjamas.

I groaned and heaved myself off the bed – yes, I heaved myself. I wasn’t feeling very cooperative. Not even for myself.

I had stayed at Zane’s mansion for a week, and I knew where his room was, thanks to my attempts at trying to escape.

I knocked on his door tentatively, and got no answer. I knocked again, and I still got no answer. I opened the door and poked my head through, and then frowned. There was no one there. I walked into his room and peered around cautiously, but still I saw no one. And then I heard noise coming from the door that led off Zane’s room, and I assumed that he was in the shower. So I sat on his huge, king size bed and waited, smoothing out the red comforter sub-consciously.

Zane came out of his bathroom about five minutes later, wearing only a pair of jeans. He started when he saw me on his bed, and then raised an enquiring eyebrow, and that smirk was playing around his lips again. ‘Can I help you?

‘You didn’t give me any pyjamas,’ I said as he moved closer to me and lay down on his bed, his whole, muscular body sprawled out just next to me.

I couldn’t help staring at his chest. It was extremely muscular and very well toned, with a stream of dark hair starting at his belly-button and going down, down and disappearing into his jeans…

I froze when Zane cleared his throat, and I’m sure my face must have turned beet-red. I looked up at him while chewing on my lip, and I scowled when I saw that he was still wearing that stupid smirk that I’m sure other girls might have swooned over. ‘Are you done staring?’

I glared at him, which was hard because of my current state of embarrassment, and repeated. ‘I need pyjamas.’

He stretched, and I couldn’t help but admire the way his muscles rippled like a panther. ‘You can wear one of my shirts.’

I blinked. The thought of wearing even one piece of Zane’s clothing seemed strangely…intimate. ‘I…I don’t really…’

He rolled his eyes and got up off his bed, reached into his drawer and pulled out a yellow dress shirt. He handed to me and I took it hesitantly. I looked up at him and smiled. ‘Thankyou, Zane.’

He nodded, and I got up off the bed and turned to leave, but a hand spun me back around. ‘Don’t I get a goodnight kiss?’

My heart immediately accelerated, and my eyes widened. Then, before I knew what was happening, Zane had pulled me down onto him, so that I was lying on top of him, and my hair spread out on either side of his face as he dragged my lips down to his. The kiss was hot, passionate, and just about blew my mind. It was only when I came up for air that I realised I was straddling his hips, and I turned a million shades of red when Zane grinned up at me from where he was lying beneath me.

I ran out of there as quickly as I could.

----------------------

After I had slipped off my tank-top and jeans, I drew Zane’s shirt towards me and inhaled deeply, closed my eyes as the familiar and welcoming – welcoming?!?!? – scent washed over me. I pulled on the shirt, buttoned all of them up except the two top ones, and looked down to see that the shirt reached me on mid-thigh.

It was as I had just climbed into bed and closed my eyes that I was faced with a dilemma. From my window, I could hear thunder and lighting snap and crackle, and I froze under the covers. I had always had a major phobia of thunder and lightning. When I was a little girl, I had been playing with my sister in the garden as it was raining, when it had begun to thunder and lightning. I was amazed with the lightning, amazed at how pretty it looked, and was so pre-occupied with its beauty that I never considered the possibility that it could harm me. As it was, it didn’t actually hurt me in anyway, but the washing-line pole got struck by a bolt of lightning, and from that day on, I had never, ever liked it.

And I was stuck in a room with nowhere to go with thunder and lighting snapping outside of my window. Just great.

The idea of me venturing into Zane’s room was most definitely not going to happen again. But as the thunder got louder, I began having second-thoughts.

I quietly got out of bed and covered my ears with my hand, humming loudly to drown out the offending noises outside. I tip-toed across the hall and let out a silent scream as a snap of deafening thunder whipped through the sky. I ran the last couple of steps to Zane’s room, and frantically knocked on the door, then opened it without invitation.

Zane was still laying there, with the lights on and his hands folded behind his head, looking up at the ceiling, and he snapped his head around when he saw me standing in his doorway.

‘Zane,’ I whimpered, my hands still covering my ears. ‘Zane.’

‘Colie?’ He questioned as got up off his bed and moved towards me, and I whimpered as the flash of lightning brightened up Zane’s curtains. I squealed and jumped into Zane’s arms as the loudest bang on thunder yet cracked through the sky.

His arms wrapped around me tightly and comfortably, and he whispered soothingly in my ear. ‘Shh, shhh, Colie, baby, it’s Okay.’

I clutched onto his shoulders and buried my face in his neck as the noises continued. And then he was carrying me to his bed, pulling us under the covers and then pulling it over our heads, which dulled the noises.

We were covered in darkness until my vampire increased sight got used to it. ‘Hey,’ I whispered to Zane, very much aware of the arm that was slung around me, pushing me closer to him, and the way that our faces were only millimetres apart.

‘Hey,’ Zane smiled that crooked smile that made my heart warm. ‘You don’t like the thunder and lightning.’ It wasn’t a question.

‘No,’ I said. And I felt suddenly embarrassed by the way I had acted like a scared little girl. I bowed my head and bit my lip.

‘Hey, hey,’ Zane said softly, and tilted my chin up with one, long finger. As I looked up at him, I realised that his hair wasn’t tied up, and it was the only time I had ever seen it down.

‘Your hair is beautiful,’ I said, and to take my mind off the slightly audible noises that continued in the night, I stroked the long, chestnut strands tenderly.

Zane smiled again, and wild, animal purrs started up in his chest, and I had the sudden urge to kiss his smooth-looking cheek. ‘That feels nice.’ He said appreciatively.

‘Thankyou for doing this for me,’ I said.

He only smiled, as if he knew a secret that I didn’t.

I continued to stroke his hair, and I felt my eyes begin to droop. My hand fell from his head, and the arms that were around me tightened and pulled me into a strong, warm chest. My safe haven.

‘Sleep, my beautiful Colie,’ Zane murmured, and the soothing lilt his voice had taken on just for me turned up my lips. ‘Sleep.’

And there, in the safety and warmth of Zane’s embrace, I drifted off into dreamland.
