The Diary of Scarlett Reed - Chapter 3

First it was happiness at paradise, and now it is total tragedy. The crew decides to leave without Willy. Will Scarlett ever see him again, after what happened at the waterfall?
It was about 9 o'clock when I heard something rustling beside me by my makeshift bed. The fire kept my feet warm and the waves crashing were peaceful enough to put me to sleep and yet the sun had just gone down. I quickly peeked over my shoulder to see the guard, fast asleep. Smiling, I looked over to my side, to see Willy gone. "Gotcha." I murmured to myself with a sly smile. He was going to be in so much trouble! I scrambled up, careful not to make enough noise to wake anyone up.

I watched as his dark figure walked through the palm trees. I was careful not to step on anything crunchy. After a while, it seemed like forever before he stopped. I literally stopped breathing. It was so beautiful. Not him, but the scene. He was standing by a waterfall. The water was tinted a light blue, and it was just really pretty. I put aside how he knew where this place was, and got out of my hiding place, walking over to him.

"Oh wow..." My voice was soft, and yet he heard it.
Smiling, he looked at me, "Isn't it beautiful?" His eyes sparkled a bit as he said this.
"Yah it is." I said, smiling, "I was going to tell on you for leaving but now, I don't mind."
"I knew you wouldn't do that." He said, with his smile still on.

After that, it got a little quiet. I looked away and watched the pretty waterfall, when I felt strong arms grab me softly, and pull me towards them. I looked up, full of surprise to see Willy gazing deeply into my eyes. What was going on? I didn't have enough time to think as his soft lips collided with mine. After that it was complete bliss. We had got into it, kissing more and eventually adding tongue. He was rubbing my back, and I had wrapped my arms tightly around his neck, pushing my lips on his some more.

Truthfully I had no idea what I was doing, but I bet he didn't either so it was okay with me. He got a little brave as he kissed my jaw; a soft groan escaped my lips. He started going lower to my neck, and that's when I woke up from my daze, pulling away I said, "Will... I... I got to go." I said, turning away. I always used Will when I was serious. He looked hurt, but made no objection. I watched as he sat down, and watched the waterfall. I looked at him one last time and walked back to camp. My mind was full of questions. Why did I pull away? Did he like me? Most importantly, did I like him? I pondered these thoughts as I lie down on my makeshift bed and slowly fell asleep to the crackling of the fire and the once again peaceful waves.

I woke up to the prodding in the side.
"Get up Scar!" Tommy sing-songed happily.
I groaned softly, "Why?"

"You still have to sew the sail." He reminded me and set down some fruit. I got up and yawned, stretching. I grabbed a ripe mango and walked back to the huge boat, climbing the ladder and finding the sail and spreading it out on the main deck. Going into my quarters, I found my sewing kit and walked back onto the main deck. I was quiet the whole time. My mind was still rushing with many questions that I still couldn't answer. I quickly sewed up the sail as best as I could, put my stuff away, and went back to camp. Everyone was packing stuff up and eating breakfast. We were probably leaving today for the main land, where we would drop off our cargo, and then get more cargo to bring somewhere else.

Ronald came racing up to me, eyes full of fear and panicking. He couldn't even talk.
"Ronald, calm down, what's wrong?" I asked, sighing. He spurted out a bunch of words that I couldn't even make it out.

"Calm down." I said, slightly annoyed. He stopped and took a deep breath.
"I'm sorry. But uh... how do I say this? Willy is... gone." He said.
My eyes widened, "He's dead?!?"
"What?!? No! Well... maybe. We are not sure. He was not in his bed and everyone searched the whole island!"

"Why didn't anyone tell me?!?" I was panicking myself. Was this all my fault?
"They were scared, but I just got the news. We are leaving today, and they are saying that Captain Sam is going to leave anyway." He was jumping up and down.
"But... no." I said, and pushed past him and sprinted to where I had followed Willy. The waterfall was still going strong, but there was no trace of Willy. I searched everywhere, and then returned to camp, my head and heart hurting.

Captain Sam soon joined us, with the rest of the search party. He looked especially at me.
"I'm sorry, but we are on a deadline. Willy is a strong boy; he will find his way back to the main land and if he doesn't he will be able to survive on this island, and we'll check back later for him after our drop off. There is tons of food and shelter, he will be fine." He said. I was literally on the verge of tears. More than two days without Willy? I still had to ask him what happened last night... But... what happens if he disappeared on purpose? I doubt it; he doesn't seem like the type of person to do that. I've known him for a long time.

"Now come on, let us get a move on!" He called out.

Since I was already packed, the only thing I could think of doing was going to my quarters and... well just cry. Yup, that's exactly what I did. I know pathetic right? I didn't stay in there the whole day though. After the ship left, I started to do my chores. The storm has done some damage to the wood, and that's what I worked on. At night, I went up to my usual spot, only to be left alone. I had expected the familiar creaking underneath me, but all that greeted me was silence. I laid my head down on my arms and let a couple of tears fall. Willy was like, my brother. Was it weird to 'love' your brother in a different way? I think that is how I felt right now.

The next couple of days went by slow. I think that the whole crew was affected by the disappearance of Willy. But personally, I tried not to think about it, and put my mind to the fact that today, we were going to land on the main land. I sat in the crow's nest, waiting for the first sighting of land so then I knew that I could pack up. The sea was super calm, with some moderate wind, perfect weather. After a while, I saw a long strip of green, "Land sighted!" I yelled happily, climbing down the ropes.

The whole crew cheered. I scrambled back to my quarters to pack up my things. I set them outside. Whenever we landed, the crew unloads the ship, and then spends a couple of days at the whole to say hello to loved ones and relax. Most of them will spend most of their, at the tavern. I spend most of my days exploring and hanging out with Maria. Maria is a nice girl about my age. She is one of my closest friends, whom I see about four times a year. We walk around the main land, getting myself new clothes. I stay at her house with her family. Her mother always makes delicious desserts when I get there, and her father is always so nice to me. Her father works as a Blacksmith. To me, they are like my second family.

About a while later, we finally reached land. There was a small crowd full of adults and kids, cheering and smiling happily. We all got down thanks to a high deck that they installed. It was difficult without one last year. I was one of the last people to climb down. My eyes followed Ronald and Tommy as they ran to their parents. I smiled happily and soon found Maria and her parents. I ran over and gave each a tight hug.

"Come on, let's go. I made some Tiramisu and Reginetta." Said Maria's mom kindly, with her bright smile. Yah, they are all Italian, but they were my favorite. Tiramisu is traditional Italian dessert; it's just like coffee, but in cake form. Reginetta on the other hand is sponge cake with raspberry sauce and chocolate. I'm so spoiled at Maria's house.

I walked with them on a dirt road that led through the friendly main land called Weston. I forgot to mention that, sorry. Maria's father carried my luggage for me, like he always did. I glanced at Maria; she has changed a lot since I last saw her. Her curly brown hair had gotten darker and her blue eyes shone. Her tan skin made her hair look really pretty; maybe she'd help me look that way? What am I thinking? I never thought of stuff like that ever before... We came up to their nice house, that wasn't too fancy or too poor.

Maria's dad set my trunk by Maria's room and smiled at me, "Please make yourself at home Scarlett."
"Don't I always?" I teased gently, "And please, call me Scar."
"Scar!" Maria's mom called, "Come and eat!"
I smiled happily and followed Maria back to the kitchen.

I sat on the floor, next to the huge fireplace. My stomach was full of everything I loved. Maria sat down next to me, reading one of her books.
"What are you reading?" I asked softly, sitting up and looking at her.
"Romeo and Juliet." She responded dreamily, "Shakespeare is wonderful. Romeo is so courageous and romantic. Juliet is stupid." She said the last part with a small pout.
"Why is she stupid?" I asked. I have never read the book yet, but I have heard parts from the crew.

"She pretends to kill herself, and because of her, Romeo kills himself!" She sighed, and leaned against the small couch. "I wish I had something like that..." Her eye stared off into space. For some reason, the story reminded me of Willy, at little too much. Speaking of Willy, I didn't tell Maria about him yet. I'm not sure that I will though.

"Are you done with that book?" I asked, with a small smile.
"Yah, do you want to read it?" She asked, handing it out to me.
"Yes I do thanks." I said, taking it gently and looked at the cover. The flames from the fireplace made the golden title seem to dance; it was like this book was magical.
"I have your other books that you let me lend a couple of months ago." I said, "I finished them in less than two weeks!"
"Oh wow, really? I gave you six!" She looked surprised.
"They were good." I shrugged and held the magical book to my chest, wondering what it had in store for me.

"Do you want to go for a walk?" Maria suddenly asked, breaking my daze.
"Of course." I smiled, setting the book down next to me carefully.
We both stood up and grabbed our coats, heading outside to our 'special' spot. Our 'special' spot was a large hill that had a wide view of the town, the stars, and finally the moon. It was beautiful, and we often met here with Willy, but he was the only thing that was missing.
