The Day My Brother Died

This is something I wrote about a fraternal brother that gave his life in the war on crime. While this is a true story and I didn't even change the names to protect the guilty, it is not unique. Many have given their all, and I mean ALL, in this profession.
Roy Bruce Smith shot his gun in the sky
He shouted out "the first cop to show is gonna die"

That unlucky soul was a motor sergeant
As he arrived on scene, smith ran back to his apartment

Sarge went around to cover the rear of the place
Unfortunately that's where smith ran, they met face to face

Smith had a smirk on as he squeezed the trigger
Sarge let a round go too, but Smiths gun was bigger

That one round struck smith, hitting him in the heel
It is too bad that my brother ended on the worst end of that deal

Several rifle rounds tore through Sarge like an angry mob
Smith then pulled out his magnum to finish the job

He walked over to Sarge on the ground and put it to his head
He squeezed the trigger one more time to make sure Sarge was dead

Back up arrived and Steve screwed a shotgun in smith's ear
Steve could have saved a lot of time and money for us that year

Smith took the cowards way out and threw his hands in the air
He gave up without a fight to the dismay of everyone there

He was taken into custody without any further incident
The prosecutor did his job, to death row smith went

They stuck a needle in his arm after all of his appeals were done
The governor said there is no way I put a stay on this one

Roy Bruce Smith ended the life of a husband, a brother, and a hero
All because in his life he was nothing but a zero

Knowing why god let's a guy like smith exist I will always endeavor
And while Sarge is gone, unit 24 will be in our hearts forever
