The Curly Coated Retriever is a dog known for his intelligence and his affectionate nature. The Curly coated Retriever is a dog that can be a little stubborn, but it all comes from love; he is perfect for the person that has no experience with dogs as well as for the person that has spent his/her whole life around dogs!

The Curly coated Retriever is a dog that originates in England and he was used to retrieve animals and birds for the hunter. He almost died out during the two world wars, in fact he was saved by just a couple of breeders in England.

The Curly coated Retriever is a strange looking dog, so strange that many people have asked if he is not some kind of a of mix between a Labrador and a Poodle! Many people ask if this is a dog that does not shed, well, the Curly coat is not a mix, he is a pure bred and yes he does shed…he is just a little strange looking.

The Curly coat is a dog that does need to get socialization at an early age; because this is a dog that needs plenty of exercise, love and attention form the part of his owner, his loving loyal nature is a credit to the breed. They are just wonderful companions and pets! The Curly coated Retriever is the perfect playmate for children as this dog continues to be immature and playful well into his adult doggie years. We also have the child within us dwelling inside for the rest of our lives, don’t we?

This is a dog that gets along well with just about anything, children and animals alike, although he might be a little reserved around strangers. He is independent and likes to be the boss in the house, but with a little bit of proper training, he can become a wonderful pet that knows his place in the scheme of things.

This is a god watch dog, but it is not likely that he will really guard anything, like all good retrievers, the Curly coated Retriever is a dog that likes to get into the middle of an activity and show who the champ is! Oh he just loves to show off! He is very talented when is comes to activities such as swimming, biking, hiking etc. Because of his high intelligence he is a very fast learner and a very trainable dog.

The Curly coated Retriever is a dog that has a high energy level and his ultimate goal in life is to have fun, if his owner does not find a way to keep the dog well exercised and full of games, then the Curly Coat will just find games or make games up that will amuse him, the thing is many times such games do not amuse the owner. So make sure you give him something to do.

The Curly Coat is a large dog that has a nice sturdy build with an athletic look about it…just like his name suggest, he has a coat that is tight fitting and very curly. The color of the dog’s coat is black or liver; this is generally a dog that weighs in at 60-90 pounds. Because of the type of coat, the Curly coated Retriever grooming maintenance is low, brushing is only necessary when the dog is shedding heavily; if brushed more often then necessary, he can become frizzy. This is a dog that does shed some so, he is not recommended for those that suffer from allergies.

This dog has few health problems, some of them are bloat, thyroid problems and others. The Curly coated Retriever is a dog that lives to around 10 to 12 years. Because of the health problems associated with the breed, it is never recommended to buy a puppy from a puppy mill, because they usually do not have health certificates and it is much better to just spend the extra money and get a dog that comes from a breeder that has a good reputation and is able to ensure the health and breeding of his animals.
