The Corner
First love of a shy teenager.......well, basically how she found it reciprocated
The three students were standing at the regular corner—laughing, talking. Naina sort of held herself apart from the other two. The "other two" were Mehek and Chinnu.
They were all very good friends, for lack of a better word. Mehek and and Chinnu were teased about each other coz once they had been on a project together....a rather silly reason. They only knew each other. And Naina was Chinnu’s best fried. When Mehek and Chinnu decided to befriend each other, Naina too, was dragged into it.
Mehek was an intelligent boy. He was not shy but reserved. He was well liked by his classmates. Out of the two girls, Chinnu far surpassed Naina in looks. Without meaning to she played havoc with the teenage boys’ hearts. Naina was liked by all whom she knew. She was shy—although her laughter told all together different story.
It was the day like any usual day. They made plans to stay back the next day too as that would be the last day of school years.
The next day, the whole footpath was crowded with the 10th standard students who were trying to make most of their last day together. It would be possible to keep in touch but not the same…..
Mehek and Chinnu were there speaking non stop. Naina was in the school, in an empty classroom. She was making sure there was a smile on her face and bracing against a violent attack of tears when she would have to say ‘bye’ to Mehek. She had loved him ever since she got to know him. But it was carefully hidden fancy that even Chinnu did not suspect. Mehek liked Naina, only as a friend or thought he did. He enjoyed looking at Naina as she would quietly sit in her bench, lost in her world of dreams…
She joined Mehek and Chinnu at the corner. She was as usual—laughing, chatting and yet holding herself apart. As they decided to part ways (they had to proceed in three different directions), Naina suddenly went into her shell for a few moments. She and Mehek waved at Chinnu. Naina turned to go without looking at Mehek. He caught a fleeting glance of her eyes—eyes that seemed to be full of unshed tears. He felt as though some door had opened in hi heart and was flooding it with the joy of discovery. He had discovered something special.
He said, " Ummm, Naina, give me your phone number, wont you? Note down mine also"
Two minutes later, Naina was walking down the lane what had come over Mehek. Mehek went his own way, happy that he had at last realized what was that feeling for Naina that he always felt.
