There are some places in the world where you just have to visit and the Corn Palace in South Dakota is one of them. If you are going to be anywhere in the vicinity then you must check it out. You will find that it was really worth your time and a lot of fun for the entire family, which is always a good thing! The first Corn Palace was known as the 'Corn Belt Exposition' and it was built back in the late 1890s. The Corn Palace, or Exposition, was a place where people could show their fruits and vegetables just to show how great South Dakota's soil really was. Then, when the first festival was held in 1921 a tradition was started that exists to this day. The paintings, designs, and murals on the exterior of the building are completely removed every year and new ones are applied. This requires a great deal of work by local artists as well as grain, corn, straw, oats, wheat, and much more.

The Corn Palace is sort of a multi-use building where sports events, shows, and more are held on a regular basis so no matter when you stop in you will surely find some great events to see. The point of the Corn Palace is to honor South Dakota's heritage and it does a really good job of it. The Corn Palace is located in Mitchell and is open from 8 am to 9 pm daily Memorial Day through Labor Day. The months of April, May, September and October have a shorter schedule with 8 am to 5 pm every day and the months of November through March run an even more reduced schedule with 8 am until 5 pm Monday through Friday.
