Allow me to tell you a story of a friend named Gary. Gary wasn't an overachiever, he wasn't at the top of his class, and he spend a lot of time in sports instead of on his homework, but still found time to usually complete it all. Gary was just an average high school senior. He realizes that he needs to start and should have started applying for college admissions some time ago, but he just can't decide on which university or college would help him achieve his goals. Knowing how helpful the internet is, he begins his college search over the web.
He figures starting out he might as well just try to get an associates degree and see what happens after that. He is prejudice towards a few towns throughout the country and finds universities in each of them. He feels that he is wasting a lot of time since it takes forever for him to find each college admissions application and then print them off. He has thirteen colleges just to be safe, since he is after all, just average. He fills one out. He gets all his information in all the blanks, writes a check for the admissions fees and seals it up in an envelope.
After finishing his first college application he starts to work on his second one. Gary gets bored with tedious work, so after finishing that one, he crashes on his couch and takes a nap. While asleep he is haunted with a nightmare where he receives both of his applications back with rejection letters and realizes that he only sent applications to two schools. He wakes up breathing hard and begins to panic until he realizes that he still has time to finish working on the rest of the applications.
He knows there must be an easier way. He decides to keep looking for some type of help on the internet.
He goes back to the websites and realizes that he can just type in all of his personal info right on the site. Soon he realizes, however, that his computer typing skills aren't much better than his handwriting skills. His clicking skills aren't all they are cracked up to be. He figures since all of the applications basically ask for the same information, why can't he just fill in one application and send it out to all of the college admissions officers across the nation?
He decides to do a search on Google. He types in college search and and other similar words. He looks through some of the sites, but nothing is to his liking. He decides to be more specific and types in Dartmouth College Admissions and Yale Admissions because both of his smart buddies applied and got accepted there. He thinks maybe they knew something that he didn't. (Besides being more intellectual than him). Nothing seems to work for him. Something that will solve his problem of having to fill out multiple applications for all the schools he is applying for. A resource to help him apply online not for just one college, but to apply for colleges at once and for scholarships too, that is what he is looking for.
"Where could I do that?" he thinks. "What search would get me something like that?"
He is about to throw in the towel. Even though he knows exactly what he needs, looking for it has become a chore. He has been at this admissions thing for hours and is fed up with all the trouble. he decides college isn't really even worth it. Instead of taking the time to fill in every online application, Gary just gives up with the internet and just sends in the two applications that he already filled out on paper.
Gary seems to forget about his applications until all of his friends start receiving acceptance letters to their colleges of choice. Some even received letters of approval from universities like Harvard, Yale, and Princeton. This really makes him feel left out since he didn't even try to apply to any big name schools. Finally after many weeks of waiting, he receives both of his letters on the same day, the day of his graduation. Unfortunately for him, his worst nightmare came true and both letters deny him admission into their programs. He realizes that he should have applied to more than just 2 schools, but now it is too late to get in to any prestigious school at all, and he may just have to settle for an open enrollment school instead of finding a college where he could fit in and receive the best education.
His mom had told him earlier that if he didn't get accepted into college before the night of his graduation, then she would kick him out of the house. As Gary walks down the isle for his graduation he looks at his mom with a heartbreaking look on his face. She already knew what he was going to tell her. Sure enough, Gary gets kicked out and sent on his merry way. He is forced to get a job at the local drive in, where he spends the next ten years. If only he could have found something that would have gotten his name out to more colleges so he could have gotten an education.
