Clair looked at the wall clock in Firon’s drawing room. 2:30 a.m. Sighing he stood up, stretched and walked towards the kitchen. Three mugs of coffee later they had finally been able to make a rough copy of what they had to do. Tsugumi could do the rest and they knew that. She had told them to include a page about the species. By the time Clair returned, Firon was sitting under the temporary tent they had made reading the ASFC manual.
"Clair? How many ages will it take for you to make a cup of coffee?" Clair produced the coffee and squatted down next to her. for some reason, Firon felt her heart racing every time she was with Clair from the past few weeks. She had tried to ignore the thought that she was developing feelings for him, the more she tried the more confused she got. He waved in front of her face and said, "Which species do we start with?"
"Huh? Yeah… the species…."
Clair teased her, he had read her mind, "Falling for my charms finally aren’t you Firon?"
She passed him a weak smile and they continued going through the manual. Boring.

The sun was shining through the clouds, peeping quietly over the sleeping duo. They had settled in the balcony for the night. Clair sensed the presence of another individual nearby… his alert eyes flew open and his eyes searched Firon. She was sound asleep, her head, with the tumbling hair around framing her serene face, rested in Clair’s lap. He stifled the urge to draw a stroke with the back of his fingers on her face and gently laid her head over a pillow and stood up to check the door.
Clair’s voice came over the message box, "Hullo! Morning."
Tsugumi answered from beyond the door, "Clair? Is that you?" He heard her gasp. Gone… she would think on the typical lines- Firon and Clair- one night together…. The next moment he opened the door and let her in. The room was well known to her. She looked down and followed the floor. One could clearly see she was trying not to interrupt the ‘couple’. Clair rolled his eyes and led her to the balcony. Tsugumi squinted in the early sunlight. Clair kneeled next to Firon and tugged at her pillow in an attempt to wake her up. She let out a soft groan of annoyance and turned toward him.
"Firon… morning… it’s our second last day of being trainee causes…" He held out a hand which she grabbed slowly then firmly. "Yeah! That’s my girl!" She said her voice laden with sleep, "Sexist! You shouldn’t be calling me your girl, remember …" She was going to start the story of how she had rejected him when she spotted Tsugumi. Taking a deep breath she said, "Mornin’ Tsugumi. What brings you to my den?"
Tsugumi adjusted her skirt and replied with flourish, "I’ve to prepare your report. And… I had to talk about your first assignment."
Clair felt Firon snuggle closer to him and put an arm around her shoulder as if trying to shield her from the impending unknown. Firon said softly, "If you could wait for ten minutes, I’d get refreshed. Meanwhile," she addressed Clair with her eyes, "You can prepare coffee for all three of us."
Clair bowed low and said, "As my queen wishes…." With a squeeze on the shoulder he left the two girls standing in the balcony. Tsugumi said in a whisper, "Hey… I had a doubt… last night, did you…"
"Ugh! You are seeing too much doc! You know the story… we’re not in love…" She closed her eyes feeling the warmth of the sun and the coolness of the breeze at the same time, "But I… no, I’ll talk to you some other time."
"I understand, I’d like to sit with you guys for a few hours to discuss your papers. And Firon, thanks for being a good friend."
Firon’s face showed mild surprise to which Tsugumi answered, "Shade left today. She’s on an assignment with the Zeya tribe. They are a minority, but causes are insured before going with the Zeya folk. She’ll come back, won’t she?"
Firon stroked her friend’s back and nodded. "Why don’t you go through the papers of our personal lives, the past and all. That will take your mind off your worries. Meanwhile I sincerely need to use the loo." Tsugumi allowed herself to be led to the main hall. She sat on the sofa and started leafing through the papers.
Clair danced slowly, making coffee. The burgundy mess that framed her face as the morning light lit up her cheeks, the innocence in her face, the unhidden pain of losing everything which he saw only when she slept. Her way of calling him names. He took in the view of the coffee swirling in the cup as he poured milk in it. Till the nineteenth year of life he had lived to find out who he was. And then since the day he befriended Firon, the lab partner, the girl who was wrongly born female, who should have been a guy, he lived to make her his. To know her better than himself. It made him tick to know how and why destiny had chosen her to become his partner even as a cause. And now they were going to start working. Something which he hadn’t told Firon was how his security was breached. He wanted to find how and why they were found in Australia. Who picked them up and transferred them to ASFC back. Who would have wanted to execute him? It was insane to go after the innocent cafeteria owner or Firon… but still, who?
