The Car

This is based on a picture that I had to write a story about. The picture was of a rusted, old-looking car in a meadow. Please Comment and let me know how/if you liked it. Thanks
The growling surrounded her; the only safe place for miles around was a rusty, old car that had definitely seen better years. She ran, hoping she could make it to the car before "they" caught up, whatever "they" were, because if they did they would tear her apart, limb-from-limb.

The growling was closer now; it was always getting closer when she finally... woke up. Sapphire rolled out of bed, before bolting to the bathroom, chest heaving, head hurting, and blood pounding.

Once she reached the bathroom, she stopped to listen, good nothing, she hadn't woken her parents. She washed the sweat off of her brow before returning to her bedroom where she stared out the window at where her rusted, old car was parked, surrounded by the forest that was the source of her nightmares.

Ever since they moved to this place she'd have the same nightmare over and over. Every night the dream held her as an unwilling captive longer and longer. Sapphire was beginning to get the unpleasant feeling that if the creatures of the night that chased her relentlessly killed her in the dream, a part of her in the waking world would also die.

She had only told her parents the first night the nightmare had occurred because they had been awakened by her screams. If hadn't been for her parents' waking her up then she would have been killed by the black, dark forms, with glowing, crimson eyes, that continuously, relentlessly growled. In the nightmare she always had to scramble to retrieve her composure, to prove to herself that she wasn't totally terrified, totally unlike her normally cool, composed self.

But, this was the first time that she had seen the car, so why was it there in her nightmare. Was it there to protect her, or just hold her until "they" got to her? She didn't know, and, frankly, Sapphire didn't care, all she wanted was to go back to her safe hometown.

Sapphire sat there and blindly looked out the window, just sitting there and staring at her rusty, old car which was sitting there getting even rustier day-by-day. She finally rose and headed for the kitchen for something red and dripping blood from its pores, a nice thick slab of dark, red meat.

Once Sapphire ate and drank her fill, she tilted her head to listen for signs that her parents were waking up, but still nothing. That in itself was strange because they were always awake at dawn.

Sapphire pushed herself away from the table, rose, and began to jog up the stairs. When she reached the top, she picked up speed until she reached her parents' bedroom door. Slowly, she raised her hand to knock, but before she could the door swung open.

In front of Sapphire's face was nothing, absolutely nothing. Nothing was there, no clothes, no bed, and no shoes in a line, nothing to show that her parents' existed. As she stood there in shock, Sapphire noticed a note lying on the floor, so she strode over to where it was, picked it up, and began to read what it said.

"If you want either your mom or your father back again, alive, we suggest you go to the kitchen and follow the instructions we left for you. Remember either, or, not both, make your decision now, and don't change your mind. We're watching you, so don't do anything stupid."

Sapphire numbly turned, and walked back down to the kitchen, whereas the note said, there was another note, this one scrawled in another's hand. And, she noted that this note had flecks of rust on the backside; kind of like the person had written it on the hood of a rusty vehicle. They obviously didn't plan very far ahead after abducting my parents, Sapphire thought to herself. This note said:

"Go to your car, the keys are in the ignition, start it, and drive down the path to the center of the forest. We'll be watching everything you do, so beware. (Hope that you've made your decision concerning which of your parents you'll get back alive.)"

She folded the note, and tucked it into the waistband of her pajamas before turning on her heels to return upstairs. Once back upstairs she went to her room, and dressed like she was going to a biker's funeral; everything she put on was black leather. The only thing that was colored on the leather was the crimson stitching and the crimson dragon on the back of her jacket. After Sapphire changed into her "battle gear", she went to her closet and removed several silver knives that each had a different crimson dragon carved into the blade, and set them lovingly into sheaths that crossed her chest and back. Then she sauntered into her parents' bedroom. Inside the door, Sapphire took several deep breaths, and slowly inhaled through her nose as she scented the air.

The scent that came to her was as familiar to her as her parents' scents. It was the smell that had them running away from her hometown, the scent of their enemies. Sapphire smiled grimly, and, then, slowly she returned to her closet and picked up the only sword that hung there. Like all of her other weapons the sword had a crimson dragon engraved onto the blade, but unlike her other blades this one wasn't silver; it was black. After buckling the sword to her hip, Sapphire quietly slipped out of her window because it was closer to her car.

After delicately sliding down the drain pipe, Sapphire slinked down to her car. True to its word, the rusty car had the keys into the ignition, so all she had to do was turn them to start it. Before she hit the gas, a slip of white paper fell out of the visor and onto her lap. She picked it up, and began to earnestly read what it said, "Sapphire if you're reading this, then, your father and I have been abducted by the things that we talked about. If they left you any notes don't listen to them and drive as fast as you safely can until you reach your aunt's house. If you show up there by yourself, then they'll know that we have been captured. Remember that we'll love you no matter what happens to us. Love, Mom and Dad."
