The Book of Maya: Chapter Two - An Undeserved Punishment

Maya is bad ass but she has a secret of unrequited love.
We all have a love story. I suppose I'm better off than most. I didn't have to deal with drama. As I sit here writing this chapter of my long life as Maya the Changing, I can't help but think of what if's... He has a girlfriend and I've never, despite what people think, think of breaking someone's heart for the sake of my own. I never stood a chance anyway. Love can be painful but I tell myself I got away unscathed.

I sat still and listened intently to Jeremiah speak to me and Lilith. Lilith, who was my friend and being courted by the man I loved. Jeremiah, the best friend of the courtier.

"Miss Forbes, can I have a moment of your time out in the hall?" Jeremiah was saying and I nodded. It was uncommon to say the least and half the eaves-dropping ton had turned to look at the imposture idea. Forbes had been the surname I desired, to be nondescript. It went well with Maya and with my looks I usually could pass as a foreigner. Usually, Jeremiah had caught on a lot about me. I had been born in this area and I'd stayed throughout the ages. Ashton went off to do better things with his time, entertaining that ninny, Marissa.

I rose from my seat and placed my gloved hand in his awaiting open one. Then, we proceeded in a slow walk to the hall door. Once we were somewhat alone, he turned to me with an odd stare.

"How vexing. Your open announcement made people stare."

"Maya. Leave Galen out of your world. He couldn't handle it. He belongs to Lilith, a woman who can give him a long happy life with joyous, bouncing children."

I faltered. Jeremiah had found out about my world. He seemed capable. He was also a very good judge of character. Galen seemed happy with Lilith. More so, without me. I finally made my decision as I stared into Jeremiah's perfect ocean blue eyes.

"Okay," I whispered. We went back in and pretended nothing happened. The next day, I left my beloved home.

If I had stayed for my Galen would things have turned out differently? I had heard that both men, Galen and Jeremiah, converted vampires. I never have been able to get the courage to find them. It is my punishment for letting things get to out of hand. Love isn't for the evil...
Does Maya deserve sympathy?
Nope, she didn't have guts.
Yes, we've all had that problem.
I don't think she wants it.
