The Beatles 10 Best Love Songs

The Beatles wrote all kinds of different types of songs. This list is all about their 10 greatest love songs (and that's romantic love, not universal love.)
The Beatles 10 Best Love Songs
These are The Beatles 10 greatest love songs in my opinion. Love can mean a lot of different things of course, in this article I'm talking about romantic love which is different than universal love (which is what John Lennon is singing about in "All You Need Is Love.") The songs are listed alphabetically.

"And I Love Her" - Arguably Paul McCartney's first really brilliant ballad. The lyrics aren't really standout but the song is beautiful. It can be found on 1964's A Hard Day's Night.

"Don't Let Me Down" - This is John Lennon singing to Yoko Ono and if you listen to this song I think you can tell just how in love Lennon was with her. The passion just seeps out of it. You can find this song on Let It Be... Naked.

"Here, There, & Everywhere" - Possibly the most beautiful song Paul McCartney has ever written and obviously that is saying a great deal. You can hear this masterpiece on 1966's Revolver which is one of the greatest albums ever by anyone.

"In My Life" - It almost seems like a slight to just refer to this song as a "romantic love song" as I think it's so much more than that. But it's simply one of The Beatles most perfect songs and that's saying a lot. You can find this classic tune on 1965's Rubber Soul.

"I Will" - This is a truly beautiful little tune by Paul McCartney that he wrote about the love of his life, Linda Eastman (who he married. They were together until her death.) There have been some nice cover versions of "I Will" over the years, including a really good one by Allison Krauss that is a bit more melodramatic if that's what you are looking for. The original can be found on 1968's The Beatles (usually referred to as The White Album.)

"If I Fell" - Gorgeous. This John Lennon track is pure gorgeousness! The harmonies, the lyrics. It all works perfectly. One of my favorite early Beatles songs. It can be found on 1964's A Hard Day's Night.

"I've Just Seen A Face" - What a great little tune that sounds unlike anything else The Beatles ever recorded. It's got a sort of bluegrass feeling to it and it's about as catchy as a song can get. It can be found on 1965's Help!

"Something" - This is probably the most well known song on this list as I believe it's the only one that was a hit song (the only one included on the 1 compilation.) For some reason most of The Beatles most famous songs either didn't deal with romantic love or dealt with it in an "All My Loving" or "I Want To Hold Your Hand" sort of way and those songs don't really fit with the theme I'm creating here. With this list I'm looking for ballads really, not upbeat pop songs like "I Want To Hold Your Hand." Anyway, back on topic, "Something" is beautiful. It was apparently Frank Sinatra's favorite Beatles song. You can find "Something" on 1969's Abbey Road.

"Things We Said Today" - A very underrated early McCartney tune. I think it has some of the best lyrics in a McCartney love song. It's also the 3rd song on this list from 1964's A Hard Day's Night. What a brilliant album that is, by the way. A definite essential album if you have any interest in The Beatles early work.

"This Boy" - You may have noticed that many of these songs are from the earlier part of The Beatles career and there's a good reason for that. That's when they were writing a lot more romantic love songs, for the most part they stopped writing songs with this theme around 1967. This may be the least well known song on this list because it was a 1963 b-side and not included on any of their original albums. You can find it on the Past Masters Vol. 1 CD (I highly recommend both the Past Masters CDs as they have a lot of The Beatles greatest songs on them.)
