The Basics of Outdoor Water Fountains
Outdoor Water Fountains are like water falls in a controlled environment. Since the average home owner can't afford to install a cascading water fall in their backyard, a fountain is really the next best thing.

It's a symbiosis of sorts. Outdoor fountains trigger the memories of an out back adventure of finding a virgin water fall. Maybe it triggers the sensation felt when experiencing that delicious trip to Hawaii with the crystal beads of cascading water dancing on ones face in the jungle of paradise.

Whatever the memories triggered by these outdoor water fountains, there is one unquestioned result experienced by anyone who comes within it's shadows - an urge to relax.

Fountains come in many shapes and sizes. From Regal lions to Feng Shui type Minimalism, there is certainly a shape or form for every yard and personality. Though concrete may appear to be the most common material, they also come in slate, glass, bamboo, fiberglass, copper and other assorted materials.

The basic outdoor water fountain is comprised of 5 standard parts which is helpful to know if you are planning on purchasing a fountain.

These are:

The Reservoir - the "bowl" where the water is collected.

The Pump - due to the many styles of pumps, it may require some research. Too big of a pump and there will be a splash issue, too small and it may not be able to move the water as designed.

The Fountain Piece - this is the rippling sound effect producer. It is the lion's mouth or the pivoting bamboo, it's the piece that appears to be supplying the water.

The Tubing - most often made of vinyl, this is the pump to fountain piece water mover. Various lengths are available to meet the demand of your specific fountain design

The Accessories - some fountains include lights, foggers or other complimentary accessories to accent the already soothing water fall like experience. A person can add these to the fountain independently after initial purchase as well.

Now that you have the basic vocabulary of a fountains elements, there are a few more important considerations to address before purchasing your outdoor water fountain. These are size, design and climate.

Size relates to the actual space available in which to place the fountain. You will need to be allow room for splash potential and traffic flow. Based on the size and weight, check for proper support since the fountain plus the water can put a strain on a deck or other similar surfaces.

Design, of course, is really a matter of personal preference but with the wide variety of fountains available, it is a good idea to put some thought into your overall landscaping ideas to assure a design flow.

Climate is important in that you will have to find out how to winterize that fountain before the freeze hits if living in a that particular zone. Freezing can do much damage in the way of cracking the fountain or destroying the pump. It is best to remove the pump in the winter months as well as cover the fountain to prevent it filling with snow or rain water risking a consequential freeze. If you prefer to run your fountain year round, heaters are available as an add on accessory.

Outdoor water fountains are beautiful, affordable and always a welcome addition to a backyard, courtyard or a portico accent. They provide a wonderful ambient sound throughout the day and into the night, always reminding us that it is OK to slow down and relax.
