Chapter 1
Miguel De Silva crouched down low in the bushes. There was a pathway between the stony cliff and the bushes where he lay. There was a slight breeze causing his black cape to stir. The carriage was coming up ahead now.
He bent lower. The two letters carved on the door, assured Miguel it was the carriage he was looking for. LL. The Lovelace family. The family who would know what he was looking for. ‘Find the Angel’s Heart…..’ Those had been his father’s dying words. Any minute now the carriage was just about to pass him, he had to strike at just the right time……

Maria Lovelace sat in the carriage peering out the window. It was a sunny day, as Maria and her family were going to visit her aunt. The crystal necklace she wore glistened brightly in the sunlight. She smiled to herself. She was a lucky daughter to have such a generous father. The carriage stopped. Maria’s father’s brow furrowed in concern.
"Senor! Why have he stopped? Senor!" her father called out to the coach man.
Just then the carriage door opened and in stepped a man who had the face of an angel, but the looks of an outlaw. Maria gasped, she had never seen another man so beautiful but so dangerous at the same time.
"Who are you!" her father shouted enraged.
The man drew out a sword and held it to her father’s throat. She stiffened. He turned towards her and his eyes widened for just a second before he quickly turned his attention back to her father, "I Senor, am Miguel De Silva, you know what I am looking for. Where is the Angel’s Heart?"
Her father’s eyes flickered with recognition, but he turned his head and dropped his eyes.
"I do not know what you are talking about Senor." Her father replied. Miguel pressed his sword harder against his throat. Her father winced but other than that his expression did not change.
"But I think you do know Senor, were you not friends with my father? Or one of your previous friends should I say?"
Maria looked at her father, what was the stranger talking about, why wasn’t he shouting and raving at the man who had suddenly high-jacked their carriage. Just then, Maria adjusted herself, getting ready to fight if she had to. The sword she had strapped to her leg was now suddenly cold and as she moved her necklace caught the light.
Miguel looked at her with his piercing blue eyes. Maria suppressed a gasp, his eyes did something to her. It made her feel strange… His eyes zeroed on the necklace she was wearing.
"The Angel’s Heart…" he murmured.
He reached out a hand as to touch the necklace, but as he did, his hand brushed some of her bare skin. Her eyes widened at the electric current rushing through her.
"Don’t you touch her!" her father snarled.
Miguel looked at him and then back at Maria. The light reflecting of her necklace illuminated Miguel’s face. He smiled half heartedly.
"Sorry Senorita," he said.
Before Maria could react, he tore the necklace form her neck and took off out the door. Enraged, Maria went after him. Miguel had taken one of the carriage’s horses. She took the other one. She rode trying to catch up to him. She could faintly hear her father’s protest.
"Maria come back!"
But she ignored him. Who was this stranger named Miguel who thought he had the right to steal? The wind ripped through her hair. She remembered being a child again, riding the horses out into the golden fields. She held on tight, she hadn’t felt this excited since she was little. The trees passed her in a blur, and the ground beneath her flew.
She could just see him up a head. He looked back, his eyes narrowed but had a hint of humor in them. He gave her a small smile as if he was enjoying the chase and hurried the horse on. But Maria wasn’t the type to give up easily. Miguel was entering the woods now and she rode after him. ‘He’s heading for the meadow,’ she thought. Maria knew a short cut.
Cutting through the trees, she disappeared out of sight.
