The Alkaline Diet: Is It Anti Aging?
Just what is the Alkaline Diet and is is anti aging? Keep reading to find out.
You are probably thinking to yourself, this ‘Alkaline’ diet does not sound like the most appealing diet. You aren’t the only one to think that at first. You might also have heard it called the alkaline acid diet. This diet encourages the consumption of fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, and tubers.
While the alkaline diet may have a more intimidating name it’s actually not that bad but does contain somewhat different foods than we most people normally eat. It really consists of more natural foods and fewer processed plants or animal foods.
The concept of this diet is rather simple. You eat foods that you already know are good for you like vegetables and leafy greens while avoiding those that are unhealthy like bad fats, sugar, yeast and of course, alcohol.
The research is a bit more difficult and complex but the main thing to focus on is consuming high amounts of alkaline vegetables and fruit, along with alkaline waters and juices.
The alkaline diet emphasizes an 80/20 split of alkaline to acidic foods. This should be your target ratio when doing this diet. It probably sounds more complicating than it really is. Consider it this way, a majority of the food we already eat basically turn to either acidic or alkaline foods once properly and fully digested. This also includes shellfish, salt, poultry, milk produce, meat, and fish. All of these foods are more common in the western diet.
While you should already be eating more alkaline foods like fresh veggies and fruits, not all of us can follow this track. Therefore we end up with a higher alkaline amount in our blood but our pH levels remain in the normal range; 7.35 to 7.45.
The alkaline diet’s theory is you need to eat foods that reflect your pH levels. This is how our ancestors did it. When you alkalinize, you feel more energetic and you also look younger as well. How? When your body is healthier and is able to function at optimal levels, you get rid of toxins and your cells (including your skin) looks better and younger.
This diet does not contain high fat and protein, with low carbs like other diets that are ‘in’. A majority of people have never heard of this diet or even the alkaline/acid balance in our body, but nutritionists and even holistic doctors use and recommend this diet. Why? Because they believe having this balance is a must for keeping our bodies healthy and preventing diseases and illnesses such as cancer. On the other hand, a majority if conventional and modern doctors do not believe in this diet and do not endorse it either.
So why would someone choose to go on this diet? Mainly because many people believe that an alkaline diet can help chronic diseases. Right now there isn’t a substantial amount of research or evidence to back this up but overall the diet encourages you to consume more healthy foods which is why doctors recommend it.
People who normally don’t feel very well without high carbs and protein foods might find success on this diet. Or people who have an abundant amount of stress than the normal person and who already eat many acidic foods.
As always it’s best to speak with your doctor or physician before beginning any diet. It isn’t recommended that anyone experiencing kidney failure, whether it’s chronic or acute, should not attempt this diet without first talking with their doctor.
