The Aftermath of Love (Chapter Two)
A young teenage girl escapes her home. After two years she now returns home a grown woman. She finds her life is turned upside down. She has to pick up the pieces and suffer the consequences of the last two years that has past and make a mends with her family and life.
Pare and I walked through the back door which leads straight into the kitchen . I saw one of my aunties handing out buttered and jammed fried bread to some children. I saw my uncle smiling at me and my sister.
"She’s staying her for a couple of days okay" said Pare
"Hello to you to Polly. You don’t come here often. Nice of you to bring your sister." said my aunty
"Lily I have to leave you now okay. I promise I will come and see you after work okay sweetheart"
"Huh I highly doubt she’s going to come back after work hun" snorted my aunty.
Then I felt a pang of sadness of what happened to me today and not wanting my sister to leave me by myself even though this was my family. I felt tears falling from my eyes. Pare automatically dropped my bags on the floor and she held me in her arms once again trying to calm me down. Everyone just stopped what they were doing and just stared at me and my sister, wondering what are those Carrols sisters up to now. I briefly heard my aunt yelling at my uncle to get the old lady. While she told the kids in the kitchen to bugger off. Within a second he was gone and I saw a dark handsome Maori guy appear from a door connecting to the hall. I would notice him he any where. My brother Anaru. I was still crying and I saw my sister move as he picked me up and asked what was wrong.
"Nothing" as I sobbed trying to be brave and not wanting anyone to know what happened.
"Bullshit" my sister coughed
"What" asked my brother wanting to know more
"Nothing, Put me down now" I demanded yelling at my brother
"Fine" he said putting me down and sitting me on a chair
He then put my down and looked down at me and saw my bruised cheek.
"Where you get that from?" he asked
"No where" I replied
"Bullshit where did you get it from?" he demanded
"I fell down the stairs" I replied back to my brother
"Ha whatever" laughed my brother "You’re a good liar just like your mother"
My aunty just looked at me and shook her head. Knowing very well where I got the bruise from. A few minutes passed and I was sitting on a chair in the kitchen with red eyes while my sister was trying to calm me down and I was trying to recover my breathe. My Kuia came running into the kitchen and picked me up and we should there hugging each other and my Kuia crying. She took a step back and examined my face.
"That f*cking bastard" yelled Kuia
"Kuia, Don’t use that language in front of the girl" snapped my aunty
"I will use any bloody language I would like" replied Kuia
"Right said my aunty wanting to change the subject. Hera go with your cousin bubs."
"Bubs, Bubs Where is that girl?" said my aunty thinking to herself out loud.
"Ma mum I’m here what do you want??" asked bubs walking into the kitchen from the back yard.
"Come here girl. Here look after your cousin would you, well we talk" replied my aunt
"Come Cousin. Let’s get a feed. I bloody starving." said bubs
"What girl, Didn’t you just eat??" asked my uncle bubs father.
"You are really your mothers child aren’t you" he laughed

"Come cousin" said Bubs pulling her cousin away from the kitchen. "Look at that bruise. It’s choice" said bubs
"Thanks I guess but it bloody hurt"
"How did you get it?? I want one too. Where bouts do you reckon I should get mine?? This cheek or the other one??" laughed Bubs
I tripped and fell down the stairs"
"Ha. No one believes you" grinned Bubs
"Come cuz. We can listen to them adults talk." said bubs
Bubs and I went to listen to my brother, sister, uncle, aunty and kuia. I didn’t really want to go but my cousin wasn’t one to say no to and she looked real excited. I heard them talk about what happened today. I heard swearing and heard my brother thump the kitchen table. I heard my Kuia cry. Around me I saw everyone looking towards the kitchen wondering what the hell is happening. I turned to my cousin bubs who was looking at me with her mouth wide open and her eyes wide as sauce pans.
"What" I said to break the silence
"Lets get feed now. Mother won’t like us listening"
"Neither would Kuia" I growled back.

Once bubs and I went for a feed I went to sit down with some of cousins. The stupid ones and drunk ones asked where I got the bruise from. Some wanted to touch it and one of my uncle said I was lucky that I didn’t get a black eye. Once bubs and I finished eating some freshly cooked hangi bubs disappeared off somewhere. So I was left with my drunken cousins who wanted to sing a waiata.
As one of my cousins pulled out his guitar and started strumming I knew I had to sing and what song to sing.
Pokarekare ana
Nga wai o Waiapau
Whiti atu koe e hine
Marino ana e
As I was singing I saw most people stopped what they were doing and were stared at me. No one joined in the singing today. All eyes were on me. I took a breath of fresh air smelling hangi and alcohol mixed together. I smiled and continued to sing.
E hine e
Hoki mai ra
Ka mate ahau
I te aroha e

On the other side of the back yard where the house was, was one twelve year old girl sitting under the kitchen window listening to the adults talking. You could have easily spotted her but she knew everyone was listening to her beautiful cousin sing like an angel even more beautifier than an angel bubs thought to herself. Which she hasn’t had the chance to listen to an angel sing before but they are told to sing beautiful melodies. She reckon her cousin Hera, whose was named after their gran could be an angel and should have be called Anahera. She was the most pretties girl who walked the earth. Hera didn’t know she was attractive she probably thought she was ugly. Bubs had once thought maybe her cousin dropped out of the sky once and asked her mother. Hera looked so comfortable amongst her Maori cousins she could have even looked like a Pakeha sitting with Maoris. Her cousins tanned skin was a lot lighter than everyone around her. She should out because everyone was looking at her but just the way she looks. Her straight light chocolate brown hair at the ends end it with curl into lustrous ringlets that always smelt good compared with most of the dark brown hair or black hair people surrounding her with unruly hairstyles. She thought when her cousin could grow up become a model or singer or maybe both. Bubs snapped out of her trance as she heard raised voices.
"Who’s the father?"
"I’m not telling you jerk"
"Stop arguing you two I need time to think" bubs could understand who voice that stopped the two from arguing even farther. It was bubs mum speaking
"That fucking bastard, He’s not the father is he?" bawled out Kauri
"No but still I don’t want this thing" she thought she heard Polly’s voice.
"It’s not right you know. It’s not just a thing. It’s a life that you’ve got to look after "yelled Anaru
"I don’t have too and I don’t want to. Okay"
"See it’s that fucking whore house you’re working in. All of yours bloody hell. I don‘t want my baby growing up to work in a shit hole like that"
Bubs loved one thing in the world besides her cousin Hera or food. She loved gossip. Time to tell the family as she got up from her spot under the window she saw someone storm out of the back door. Afraid bubs thought it might be her mother she sat but down but she then she it was her cousin Anaru in an angry mood.

"Bubs, Bubs come back into the kitchen" yelled my auntie
My auntie stepped out of the kitchen and scanned the crowds of people for her twelve year old daughter and niece. My aunt spotted my cousin sitting under the kitchen window trying to hear the voices inside.
"Bubs, Bubs haere mai"
So bubs did what her mother asked. She went to her mother, fearing she would get smacked.
"Where’s your cousin?? You were suppose to bring your cousin you know. I expect you were listening to what we were talking about in the kitchen to. I Wished you didn’t" said her mother
"Ma what are they talking about?"
"Shhh girl this why I didn’t want you to listen to what we were talking about in the kitchen. We can talk a little later okay dear just go and find your cousin and bring her back here in the kitchen." said my aunty
"Bubs"
"Yeah ma" as bubs turned to her mother
"I know how much you love your cousin Hera, Whatever you heard don’t mention this to Hera. Kuia would talk with her later okay. Just don’t tell her okay after what happened today."
"Don’t worry ma I won’t do anything to hurt Hera"
"I know dear, I know. Now go fetch her.

When I walked into the kitchen I could feel the atmosphere was tense. My Kuia looked as if she had been crying her eyes all red and some makeup running down her face. My brother was no longer in the kitchen but outside drinking with the other uncles, aunties and other cousins. My uncle just sat in the same place as when I left. My poor sister was the one who took the blame as I saw her of one side of her face was red as someone has slapped her not once but more twice. My sister said that she was late for work had to go before she got into trouble with her boss. Kuia asked where Mereana was. I hadn’t thought about her since earlier today. My sister knew where she was but didn’t want to tell Kuia. Pare told her that she would ring her and get to her call them if they wanted. It was all agreed that I should stay at Kuia house for a few days but my brother didn’t want me going back to my father’s house. He hated him that’s why he moved out when he was young. He always hated the way how he treated his family especially our mother and my sisters.
"She’s staying her for a couple of days okay" said Pare
"Hello to you to Polly. You don’t come here often. Nice of you to bring your sister." said my aunty
