The Abyssinian cat

The Abyssinian is a beautiful cat with a confident and in the same time very friendly personality. Once you know it, you love it!
The Abyssinian cat
The Abyssinian cat is known for being one of the oldest of the cat breeds and one of the most beautiful! The true history of the cat is not known and is surrounded by speculation and all kinds of theories…the fact that does appear to be true is that the Abyssinian originally comes from Egypt, the paintings an sculptures found there greatly resemble this cat…but then again, they have no proof that this is the Abyssinian and not something else.

There are people who think that the Abyssinian comes from Ethiopia and there are still others who believe that this breed came from somewhere along the Indian Ocean and still others are saying Asia. However, there is not a shred of proof for any of this. One thing that people are certain about, is the fact that back in the 1930’s the very first Abyssinian cat was taken to Scandinavia. That is about it.

The Abyssinian cats that we have today do look a bit different then the very first that were imported to England and then there was some breeding with the ones brought from the USA and there you have it, a cat that really does not look a bit like what he did originally. Professional breeders love to change a breed to suite their desires, trust me, I know!

The Abyssinian is a cat that has this nice colorful coat that should be thick; it is medium in size and has this aristocratic appearance about him that is rare in the cat world. It has a body that is long with well developed muscles that are covered by a beautiful silk coat that is thick to the touch but soft and fine as well. The colors of the Abyssinian cat are red, blue, fawn and silver.

This is a cat that must be very well balanced in its whole look, what tops it off are his eyes, they can be gold or green and are simply striking to look at!

The Abyssinian is a cat that loves to be with its owners and they simply enjoy people's presence in general, if you do not pay them enough attention, they will let you know by plopping down in your lap or by doing something else. These are cats that like to be on top of the world (their world anyway). Places like refrigerators, bookshelves and anything else that is high in your household is very likely to be taken over by the cat…so be warned!

The Abyssinian is a cat that is not known for being loud and annoying but they do have their ways of letting you know how they are feeling and what they want none the less.

This is known as an active cat that likes to get around but not only that, they love to entertain you or your guests every time they get the chance. They get along well with other pets and they seem to get along well with children as well…if you are looking for a cat that will just sit around all day, then you will be disappointed with the Abyssinian because this is a cat that has a high energy level and he loves to play around!

When looking for a kitten, look for a good breeder or at least somebody that raises their cats right and cares for them…that is where you can get a good cat that will be your friend forever, these are people that care for the homes that their cats end up in. Also with a good socialization and a lot of handling since the time of birth, the result is a well balanced cat that is not afraid to be held and petted and basically be accepted into a family. There are breeders out there that do not care for their cats and want nothing but the money that is to be had. The kittens that come from such places are usually fearful and not really ready to take their place in a home, meaning that it would take a lot work to get them to be the happy, confident cats that they should have been from the start. Just take your time and make a decision that you will not regret!
