Terror Plot Launched in NYC by Bumbling Americans

Most terror plots are, we assume, launched from the dark recesses of Middle Eastern countries, but more and more, terror plots – albeit amateur attempts – are being launched from within the U.S. by Americans.
Contrary to the notion that all terror plots begin overseas in some dark, unknown cavern, police in and around New York City and the FBI are finding plenty of Americans engaged in harebrained schemes of all sorts. While most of the plots are destined to go wrong, the intent of the ambitious, if somewhat incompetent would-be terrorists makes one stop to think. In the latest plot gone wrong, four ex-convicts who saw themselves as holy warriors planned to destroy synagogues and military planes.

The four men, all of whom were Muslim, may have been better suited for a Cheech and Chong movie, as the cameras they purchased to photograph targets were purchased at Wal-Mart, they had trouble attaining guns, and at least one of the plotters smoked marijuana prior to launching their great "jihad." The bombs that the men planted outside two synagogues were loaded with inert explosives that were provided by the FBI rather than a Pakistani terrorist group, whom the men thought they were dealing with.

Still, U.S. officials are taking the plot seriously. Said Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Snyder, "It’s hard to envision a more chilling plot. These are extremely violent men." The four men – James Cromitie, David Williams, Onta Williams and Laguerre Payen - appeared in court yesterday. They were charged with conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction within the U.S. and conspiracy to use anti-aircraft missiles. The four men did not enter a plea yesterday and are being held without bail. If convicted, each man faces life in prison.
