Terriers that Don't Shed

When you talk about wanting to get a dog that does not shed, you should know that there is no dog that does not shed at all. Dogs that don't shed a lot of hair all over the house tend to shed inwardly and therefore need a biannual stripping of coat. One breed of dog that is touted as a non-shedder is terriers. While it is believed that terriers in general do not shed, the fact of the matter is that if you have a mixed terrier then you may find dog hair on your clothes and couches. Terrier Breeds that Don't Shed

Silky Terrier
Originally from Australia, the silky terrier is one of your best bets. Silky terriers have a long silky blue or tan coat which differentiates them from other terriers. This coat is often described as fine and extremely glossy which adds to their appearance. The coat is generally allowed to hang straight down and parted at the back.

Border Terrier
When you are trying to decide on which one of the terrier puppies that don't shed you should take home, opt for the Border terrier, which has a rough coat of hair. Actually this breed of terriers has a double coat of hair; one which is soft and dense and generally on the inner surface and the other that is harsh, wiry and generally resistant to dirt. The outer coat generally has no curls or waves and is completely straight. Every six months or so the coat of a Border terrier needs to be hand stripped to remove any dead hair.

Boston Terrier
Originally bred in the US, the Boston terrier is another good option. Boston terriers are primarily black or seal in color with a smooth coat that is flecked with white patches. They have a shiny and glossy coat that is extremely easy to maintain. Due to a coat that is made up of fine and short hair, they don't shed much.

Australian Terrier
As the name suggests, this breed of dog is native to Australia. It has a medium length double coat which is rough to touch. The coat is generally not trimmed and is short near the muzzle area, the lower legs, the feet and around the neck. This leads to almost negligible shedding of a coat that is in shades of blue or red.

Scottish Terrier (Scottie)
The Scottish terrier is one of the five terrier breeds that originated in the Highlands. The Scottie as this breed of terrier is popularly called, has a double layered coat with an outer coat that is rough, wiry and largely resistant to dirt and weather, and an undercoat that is soft and dense. The coat is trimmed well by most owners except for areas around the beard, eyebrows, lower body and legs, giving it an extremely shaggy appearance.

Welsh Terrier
There are claims that this breed of dog which in native to Wales is the oldest existing dog breed in the UK. It is one of the best options for a person looking for a terrier that does not shed. Their coat is made of two layers, an undercoat that protects them from the winter and a fur coat that protects them against the dirt and rain. When puppies, their coat tends to be completely black and then turns to a combination of tan and black.

Norfolk Terrier
Of all the working dogs varieties of Terriers, the Norfolk terrier is a breed that was recognized as an independent breed only in 1960. Before that the breed was considered to be a variety of Norwich terriers. A double coated dog like the other terriers, the Norfolk terrier has a coat that is wire haired and in shades as differing as red, black, tan and wheaten. The coat of the Norfolk terrier needs to be hand stripped biannually.

West Highland Terrier (Westie)
Another breed that is native to the Highlands, the Westies or the West Highland White Terrier is recognizable by their distinctive coat color which is white. Their coat is generally 2 inches long and needs proper grooming. While most of these dogs have a double coat of a soft undercoat and rough outer coat, there are some dogs that do not have the outer coat but just the silky, smooth coat on the inside. It is one of the small dogs that don't shed.

Yorkshire Terrier (Yorkie)
The Yorkshire terrier is a small dog breed that is perfect for any home owner. Native to Yorkshire in England, this breed of dog is distinguished by its blue and tan coat, which has hair that is fine, glossy, silky and grown out so that it can be parted at the back.

Cairn Terrier
One of the oldest terrier breeds, the Cairn terrier is one of the few breeds of dogs that tend to change color through their lifetime. They become more black or silver in color as they grow older. Like all other terriers, the Cairn terrier has a harsh coat that could be cream, wheaten, red, sandy, or gray. The coat of a Cairn terrier, like all other terriers, is a double coat with a smooth undercoat and a harsh outer coat, therefore, making it one of the best breeds of terriers that don't shed.
