Terriers are often defined as medium-sized, ferocious, fighting dogs that are occasionally used for hunting. Terrier mix breeds or rather, terrier hybrids have an even better physique than the original terriers.
Small, agile and muscular features are a distinct characteristic of terrier dog breeds. Unlike other shepherd dogs and hunting dogs, terriers have short, yet muscular legs. Their physique is aptly built for fighting in close ranges. The average temperament of terrier is that of a courageous fighter, which has promoted people to use them in hunting. The specialty of terriers is to hunt smaller animals such as foxes and rabbits. The terriers can maneuver and move speedily in forests, shrubs and bushes. The terriers are also known to 'flush' out game from hiding places. In the modern era however, the terriers are no longer used for hunting but have become guard dogs and have assumed the role of a companion of families.

Though the terrier have been described to be ferocious fighters, they are excellent pack animals and adjust to the family very well, the head of the family however, needs to show a leading and dominating hold over the terrier. Apart from that, behavior wise, a terrier is very playful, protective and rather active hence in a family, a terrier should be regulatory exercised, given a genuine amount of freedom and some playing space. Note that these dogs have a very good instinct and memory. Hence, never mess around with and also do not insult or hurt a terrier on purpose, it can be dangerous.
