Terrier Breeds

A short account of different terrier breeds is provided below. Along with descriptions of few breeds, a table containing names of the other breeds is presented in the article.
Name of the terrier dogs has originated from the Latin word terra. These dogs were trained to go underground in search of prey. More than hunting, vermin control was the main role of terriers. Rats, fox, mice and other such creatures were kept out of bounds of the farmer's/house owner's property by these terriers. Let us obtain the terrier breeds information through following paragraphs.

Terrier Dog Breeds

Airedale Terrier: It is the tallest breed of all terriers. Among the primary progenitors of Airedales are the black & tan and old English terrier. It is an upstanding, long-legged dog with strong bones; skin is covered with a dense, wiry and hard coat. The Airedale is an adventurous and playful dog. It is an intelligent dog however, at times can behave stubbornly. The dog needs exercises on a regular basis; taking this canine for long walks is advisable.

Bull Terrier: The Bull Terrier is a playful, exuberant and assertive dog. With other dogs and pets, the Bull Terrier can be quite aggressive; it displays affection towards the master and is a sweet-hearted dog. The Bull Terrier is a dog with strong built, has a muscular body and is also good-looking. Exercise sessions on a daily basis are must for these dogs to stay healthy; regular exercise provides them with the much-needed mental stimulation. Deafness and kidney problems affects this terrier dog the most.

Welsh Terrier: The Welsh Terrier is a bit soft-natured in comparison to other terrier breeds. It is therefore, a good house pet with calm nature. There is no need to arrange for rigorous exercise sessions required for this dog. Moderate exercise and short walks on a daily basis are however, necessary. Body frame of the Welsh Terriers is compact and square-proportioned.

American Staffordshire Terrier: The American Staffordshire Terrier is a docile and playful type of terrier dog. It is a good house pet. Although the dog behaves properly with the family, it can be aggressive with other dogs. It requires vigorous physical activity to maintain fitness levels.

Irish Terrier: This terrier breed has originated in Ireland and it was mainly used as a hunting dog. It is the fastest and oldest terrier breed which originated in 1700s. Color of the coat has different shades like red, yellow-red and red wheaten; the coat is wiry and coarse in texture. This terrier breed is characterized with long legs and a slender body. The Irish terrier, with respect to its temperament can be described as bold, aggressive, brash, independent, inquisitive and strong-willed.
