Teenager Alyssa Bustamante Sentenced to Prison for Murder

Alyssa Bustamante, who was 15 years old when she killed 9-year-old Elizabeth Olten, was sentenced to 30 years in prison yesterday.
18-year-old Alyssa Bustamante pleaded guilty in January to second-degree murder and armed criminal action for the 2009 killing of 9-year-old Elizabeth Olten. The murder took place in St. Martins, Missouri, a small, rural town located close to Jefferson City. Bustamante noted that she committed the crime because she wanted to know what it felt like to kill someone. Bustamante was sentenced yesterday to a 30-year jail term on the armed criminal action charge.

Bustamante was only 15 years old when she confessed to strangling, stabbing and slicing the throat of the younger Olten. Prior to being sentenced, Bustamante faced Olten’s mother and siblings and noted, "I know words can never be enough and they can never adequately describe how horribly I feel for all of this. If I could give my life to get her back I would. I'm sorry."

Olten’s mother, Patty Preiss, called Bustamante "an evil monster" and noted that she "hated her" on the first day of the trial. She stared blankly as Bustamante delivered her apology and the family declined to comment when pressed by reporters for a reaction. Journal entries by Bustamante indicated that she thought of the murder as something of a lark at the time. She wrote: "I strangled them and slit their throat and stabbed them now they're dead. I don't know how to feel atm. It was ahmazing. As soon as you get over the 'ohmygawd I can't do this' feeling, it's pretty enjoyable. I'm kinda nervous and shaky though right now. Kay, I gotta go to church now...lol."
