Techno-Luddite Saved By Technology

For years musician Bob Findlay shunned the internet as a means of music promotion. After 7 years away from the industry & his recent return he has realized that the internet has become more refined and is now a great advocate of its potential.
Scots-born musician and State Registered Nurse Bob Findlay who now resides in Tasmania returned to the music industry early in 2007 after a 7-year hiatus due to alcohol abuse.

He played in Tasmanias top band until the mid-90s but quit due to media cynicism and to focus on his nursing career, During this period he did continue on the music front playing the acoustic circuit and major festivals.

As alcohol slowly took total control of his life his music career all but ceased despite numerous requests from numerous musicians to return to the industry.

After one too many hospitalizations, Findlay moved to Stanley on Tasmanias far north-west coast where he has a small purpose-built recording studio. When his physical and mental state returned to the point where he was able to compose, play, record and produce again his initial music output was quite prolific, with two self-written and performed albums released in as many months. It all began as a ‘stay-sober’ exercise.

His next step on the music front was, with more than a little gentle persuasion from friends, to have a website created for him. Almost in the same breath Findlay submitted his music as mp3 audio to numerous commercial and internet and radio stations with rather rapid and widespread acclaim.

This took Findlay by surprise as he is somewhat cynical of the media which he explains on his website http://scotsbob.webs.com. He is also not particularly fond of the internet however is gradually realizing the important part that it has, and still is, playing in his return to the music industry.

Having realized the benefits of the internet whilst being ever-cautious of the numerous pitfalls, Findlay has had the creator of his website reformat the site to improve navigation. He is also now selling his music as mp3 downloads for 25c U.S., assorted merchandise and providing readers with constant updates and relevant links that may be of interest to them.

Despite Findlays initial suspicions about the use and abuse of the internet for promotional purposes, he is the first to admit that mentally, musically and physically he would not be in the position that he is today. Creating music, having it distributed worldwide and maintaining his sobriety. He is a classic example of how internet promotion and the internet in general can be utilised for genuinely productive and constructive causes…..if you want it to.
