CHAPTER: TWO
- Back In NY, At Johnny's Parents' House
"Okay Johnny, Tears is still sleeping in her crib next to our bed. Now, I will open the door, then walk with me over to the other side of the bed and then watch me ...I will whisper one, two, three, and on three..."
"Okay Beebe okay, what we don't have to do to get a few hours of sleep around here. Cry, cry, cry ...for a whole solid year now. Colic, yeah sure, that baby doctor of your brothers is quick to confirm what both our Mothers suspected, but slow when it comes to any remedies. All right, go on in, and be quiet." (squeak, squeak-[of the door]) (Whisper) Bee, remind me to oil that door tomorrow."
"Okay Honey, one, two, three, ...sit, (squeek, squeak) and those box springs could use a little oil too."
"Ooh Johnny, I forgot to set the alarm."
"Don't bother, with that Cry Baby of ours we will be up soon enough ...now give me a kiss and we'll call it a night. (smooch) Ahh, we did it, goodnight Beebe."
"Good night Johnny." (wah...wah, wah) (cry, cry, Crying) "No ...No, NO ...I'll give you something to CRY ABOUT little lady."
"No Johnny NO ...DON'T DO THAT ...MOM, MOM." (silence) (scream) (SCREAMING)
"Yes Beebe I heard Tears, she sounded as if she were in pain. Son, settle down, she is still just a baby. Here let me take her out to the living room rocking chair before she wakes up your Dad, then we would hear some real screaming and yelling." (More Baby Screaming)
"Johnny, what the hell were you trying to do? Shaking the crib like that."
"I'm sorry Beebe, it has, it is, it's just because ...oh damn ...it's our sex life, we haven't had one since Tears was born. The child has been nothing but trouble since the day that nurse put her in my arms. Tears was crying then and she has not stopped crying ever since then. I didn't mean to hurt her, it's just ...I can not stand it anymore. SHIT, the kid is going to be the end of me Bee. Tomorrow I am going to ask my mom if we can put the crib in another room. I tell you Bee, I can not take it any longer, not one more minute."
"I know what you mean Johnny, I know what you mean, but it is not as if we can give her back! Tomorrow I will call the doctor again and see if he has anytime to see her. There must be something he can give Tears for her colic ...and you know Honey, we need to look for a place of our own, your parents have been very nice about letting us stay with them, but I think your Dad has had enough of Tears and Big Brother as well. He is spending more and more time out in the garage piddling around at his workbench then he does in the house. Johnny ...listen ...can you hear that? Tears is calming down ...let's go back to bed and cuddle a little before your Mom brings Tears back to her crib."
"That's nice Johnny, hold me tight and tell me it is going to be all right."
"Oh Beebe, it will be all right, I know it will. The problem is we are two young kids with a family. Though, I have an ideal that I have been throwing around, Bee, I got to tell you something. I don't know how much longer my job is going to hold out. They have been laying guys off left and right. The job is going nowhere, it is a great big dead end. I did not want to tell you cause I know how much you worry. But I have an ideal, what would you think if I went back to school, trade school. If all goes well I think I could graduate in two years. I talked it over with my Dad the other day and he suggested that I go to school to be a carpenter. He said I had hands like his and they would be good for hammering and fitting joints. Once I get a job I can join the union, then I'll be set for life. What do you think Bee, can you handle the kids while I study at night?"
"Yes Johnny, that is a wonderful ideal and I can help out by getting a part-time job. Down at Montgomery Wards they have a little lunch counter in the back of the store, I bet I could do waitress work, what a wonderful ideal Johnny I love you."
"I love you too Beebe."
