You might have seen many advertisements that feature adorable tiny Teacup Yorkies for sale. However, do you know a simple fact, that there is no such breed known as Teacup Yorkies. The term is used to clasify tiny Yorkshire terriers, which are under the standard weight specified by American Kennel Club and registered breeders. A Yorkshire Terrier nicknamed the Yorkie, is an adorable toy dog breed with a small physique and inquisitive, energetic personalities. This terrier type breed was developed in the 1800s, in the district of Yorkshire in England. Surprisingly enough, this toy dog once belonged to the working class especially, when they were used to catch rats in a clothing mill during the nineteenth century. However, these energetic, brave and loyal dogs soon became a part of the European high society, and have since then been great companions for people. In 1878, this dog was registered by the American Kennel Club.

You can identify a Yorkie by its glamorous blue and tanned, long, silky coat which falls smoothly along its back, head and tail. It is however, important to note that the Yorkie puppies are not born with the adult coat. They usually have black and tan coats when they are young and over the months, transition to their adult coats. Most Yorkies have so much hair around their head and eyes, that it becomes necessary to gather it in a band or trim them. Teacup Yorkies are not a breed of Yorkshire terriers as is commonly believed. The term is just used to refer to terrier dog breeds, and in general Yorkshire terriers, that are on the smaller end of the weight scale set by the American Kennel Club, which is around 4lbs. Most of these dogs are bred to produce convenient lap dogs, or ones that can be carried around in the purse. It is true that sometimes two healthy normal Yorkies can have a puppy that remains small in size due to premature birth or genetics. However, it is unethical to try selling these dogs as a separate breed or for a higher price. In contrast to the reputable Teacup, dog breeders meticulously study pedigrees and the genetics of their breeding stock. This helps them in breeding smaller Yorkshire terriers that are just as healthy as a normal Yorkie.

Although they might look quite cute and healthy, it is vital to remember that Teacup Yorkshire terriers have plenty of dog health problems. Due to their small size and the lack of muscle mass they are more susceptible to hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) shock. There are many factors such as stress, fatigue, a cold environment, poor nutrition, and a change in diet or feeding schedule that may bring on hypoglycemia. It can be caused due to a bacterial infection, parasite, or a portosystemic liver shunt. It usually causes the puppy to become drowsy, listless, shaky and uncoordinated. This is because the brain relies on glucose to function. Teacup Yorkie puppies and dogs have a very short life span and are constantly prone to vomiting, diarrhea and injuries.
