One figure of speech that will be prominently seen in every figure of speech list is tautology. Tautology is nothing but repeated use of words or phrases that have a similar meaning. A lexicographer Henry Fowler defines tautology as, "saying the same thing twice". If a part of a sentence which is repeated, appears unnecessary or unessential, it can be called a tautology.

You will find many tautology examples in literature. The use of tautology in literature is generally intended, so as to stress the importance of that particular word. In case of literature plots, tautology in a sentence is also used as a hint to indicate something important that is about to happen. However, all of us make use of this figure of speech in our daily conversation unknowingly. Like, "I am feeling very sleepily sleepy as I got up at 5 am in the morning". If you closely observe this sentence, you will find unnecessary use of 'am' 'morning', 'sleepily', 'sleepy'. AM itself indicates morning and sleepily sleepy means the same thing!
