Tanning is Cool Until You Harm Your Skin
Many people like to sun tan. Who doesn't? I am of Latin descent, and I grew up relatively close to the equator. However, that doesn't mean I am immune to the sun by any means. The sun is a dangerous element we must respect. Here is a closer look at the sun and what it can do to you if you don't take proper safety precautions.
Remember the movie "There is Something About Mary?" Mary's Mom was a sun-kissed diva, who obviously spent more time in the sun than she did in an office paying the bills. Part of her wrinkly-mom role showed her in the sun, drinking cocktails and talking about the good life. Hey, good for her! Who wouldn't want to be a sugar Momma living the high life in Miami?
Well, the part about being wrinkled definitely came from her over-exposure to the sun. The sun, especially in South Florida and Miami, is an element that can cause premature aging and make people look much older than they actually are. Old age shows on our face because wrinkles dominate the face and set in as expression lines, making deep crevasses that show up form all angles. This is due to many elements, but the sun is the number one element that causes this.
When you are in the sun, sure, it's cool! Who doesn't have fun when they are tanning on a bright sunny day, adding much-needed color to their skin in order to look healthier and soak in some vitamin D. It's great, and the buzz lasts a few days if you tan evenly and properly.
However, the buzz wears off and the skin keeps a hangover for years, to put it in real terms. The skin keeps the damage from the sun while it kicks out whatever tan you obtained in only a couple days. While you may remember your day in the sun, how many beers you had, or where you were, you will certainly be reminded of it years later when you see all the wrinkles set into the skin and take over the face and eye area.
Even worse, too much sun can lead to skin cancer and other forms of cancer. It's not a pretty sight and it's a story many people have witnessed first-hand through family members. My aunt has melanoma, and it has been an emotional experience for everyone close to her. Just when you think you have treated it properly, you hear bad news. It's a very sad situation that I would not wish on anybody.
The moral of the story today is that you need to protect yourself when you are in the sun. The sun is an element not to be taken lightly. Use the best sunblock possible, wear sunglasses, and drink plenty of water. Water is an element that you need in your system to keep the skin healthy, but when you are in the sun, you need to basically double your intake. Take those things into consideration and you can rest assured you are doing what you can to prevent future ramifications.
