Tangled Lace

This poem was written as a response to a poem my husband wrote about our relationship "Tender Lace of Lilly." A woman's identity is lost in the strength of another.
I stood and let the sunshine warm my face
It seems not long ago
A heart wrapped a dream not soon to place
With time, you felt the warm breeze blow

Every tick of time was worth it then
That blessed day you noticed me
I would have given anything just to be your friend
Just to grow beside you--just to be

You saw more than eyes can see
I rode the wind with love
You saw more than I had seen in me
Each day I thanked our awesome god above

I felt so warm and so secure
I'd give it all to you
You called me sweet, and soft, and pure
You'd never hurt me--I just knew

With time we twined around and through
Our stems became as one
I rested on the strength of you
As you soaked in the sun

I trusted you with everything
You'd take care of me
I liked it there amongst the green
Though tangled, I felt free

Day by day, I clung--you grew
Your strength created space
I could touch the taste of dew
But could not touch your face

The distance led to wonder
Did you still think of me?
Did you know I clung down under?
Drank from the very root of thee?

Is this the life that God intended
When He sowed these seeds of love
For me to cling beneath--untended
And for you to thrive above?

Oh that we'd grow together
Beside, around, and through
To gain our strength from one another
And you'd need me like I need you
