Taking Control of Your Situation
Are you in control or is luck in control of you? Think about it. Luck is always, to me anyway, all about control. Your ability to control what happens around you and your response to what happens to you.
To me, I agree with Earl Nightingale whereby he said that ‘We can let circumstances rule us or we can take charge and rule our lives from within’. It’s always about control. I would like to borrow this very seemingly simple yet complicated concept from Earl Nightingale for a bit here, just for this article.
There are many responses to situations. When bad news hit, some people choose to fight it, some choose to fight it wrongly, some choose to ignore the situation hoping that it would go away soon and then some choose to wallow in it. Which one are you?
People who are lucky are the ones who take the chance to prove that nothing will hit them so bad that they can’t get up again! Unless it’s a bullet to the brain, then everything’s challengeable. And whenever it’s a challenge, there are opportunities. Lucky people don’t believe, strangely enough, in bad luck. Isn’t it ironic? The reason is simple. Successful people KNOW that there are windows of opportunities and while others are still trying to figure out what went on and what their responses should be, these people are already up on their feet, looking for that window.
I know the feeling of complete devastation when luck runs out - trust me. Some people just don’t like kneeling down in front of defeat too much and fortunately, I am one of those people. I don’t claim to be successful, far from it, and I am still learning but if not for my fighting spirit, I would not have been here today. Survival and fighting against strong violent tides of negative luck isn’t easy and I sympathize with you if you’re feeling anguish and frustration. Being negative now is not an option.
Listen, when you’re punched in the stomach or slapped across the face, you take only one second to figure out what just happened. You take another second to feel. The next second, you’re to act. And the feeling you should feel is that you’re in control. You’re free and in control of your own actions. Anger is not one of those feelings within the bracket of ‘right moves to make’ when something like that hits.
If you take control of your situation, bad luck is at your feet instead of you at its feet. Being in control does not mean, please don’t misunderstand me, that you are in control of whatever happens because I can’t imagine anyone being able to control the downturn of an economy or an earthquake.
What you are in complete control of is your feelings, the emotions surging through your veins and also your ability to respond.
