Tahoma Woman Dies in Fatal Truck Accident
A truck accident that occurred on highway 99 near Squaw Valley Road that resulted in the death of Janice Roseberry is still being investigated by the California Highway Patrol.
According to police, the three-axle truck drifted into oncoming traffic and struck Roseberry's vehicle. More injuries occurred when a third vehicle trying to avoid the accident crashed into a fourth. The driver of the truck, Daren Ott, suffered moderate injuries and was released from the hospital. This accident occurred in Tahoma, outside of Sacramento.
When a serious truck accident occurs, tests are usually performed to see if drugs or alcohol were involved. California trucking accident lawyers often observe that negligence is the most common cause of accidents involving large trucks, and many times drugs or alcohol are responsible. The majority of trucking companies do conduct random drug tests on drivers.
Speeding is also a common factor in big truck accidents. While speed limits are often slower for these vehicles, drivers must also take in to consideration the volume of traffic and weather conditions. Extra attention and care are required when driving a heavy truck in extreme conditions, and often drivers do not take the precautions needed to prevent accidents. They may drive just as they always do, even in inclement weather.
Other common causes of accidents involving large trucks are talking on cell phones, billboards and other highway distractions. Most drivers do get distracted at one time or another while traveling, but when this occurs in the driver of a large truck the consequences can be devastating. Virginia Tech Transportation Institute conducted a study that showed that text messaging while at the wheel of a large truck increased the risk of an accident by 23 times.
Trucking companies are often held responsible for the actions of their drivers. They may be named in a personal injury lawsuit that arises due to an accident involving a driver of the company. These companies are also responsible for maintaining the fleet, and making certain the driver has a safe vehicle to drive by replacing worn parts and performing general maintenance. Trucking companies must implement safe hiring practices, and make certain that the drivers they hire are trained and experienced.
