Table Top Patio Heater Safety: Can You be Safe Using a Tabletop Patio Heater?

Find out how to extend your summer outdoor time and be safe while using your table top patio heater.
Tabletop patio heaters really take the chill off the cool mornings or late evenings of certain seasons and by keeping safety in mind, you can enjoy the outdoors on your patio more than ever. You will add about 10-25 degrees of warmth to your morning coffee or evening dinner party. However, what about table top patio heater safety?

Since safety is your question, remember to choose a patio heater that will suit your needs and circumstances. Take into consideration, that you need to get some helpful advice before you dash into a purchase.

Think about your tabletop patio heater and know how you will use it. Will you put it in a corner on a small table or in the middle of the dining table? Who will be sitting at the table... Little children or adults? Remember the activities that go on at a regular dining table and that may help you choose the best location for your heater.

Buy only a heater that has a tip-over shut-off valve. This will help avoid many injuries. The warmth from the heater will spread over a 12' area and will stand about 34" off the surface of your table. With the heat coming from the propane or natural gas fuel or from the bulb, take care around the lamp. There will surely be some heat radiating from the touchable part.

Consider the safety of your children or guest if you decide to get an electric tabletop patio heater. Some cords are a mere 8' long and may require an extension cord. The more cord exposed, the greater the risk for tripping. Tape the cord down or cover the cord with a outdoor, non-slip rug.

Buy only CSA and UL approved units and buy from a reputable dealer. When you buy new, your warranty will be valid. Avoid used tabletop patio heaters. Safety comes from reading and following all the enclosed directions for your new heater. Enjoy the expansion of your outdoor dining and other activities, but be safe when using your tabletop heaters!
