Synthetic Wig Care

Want your wig to look beautiful and last long? Read this article and follow instructions on synthetic wig care, to solve your problem.
People use wigs to enhance their look. The two commonly found types are either made of synthetic fiber or made with human hair. In comparison to human wigs, the synthetic ones are simpler to take care of. The only aspect you need to bear in mind is while you might be using normal hair care products for human hair wigs, synthetic wigs will require you to use specifically made products. These type of wigs generally last for about six months.

Caring for Synthetic Wigs

When it comes to wig care, you need to know how to wash, style and store it correctly. This will ensure that the wig lasts long. There are a few synthetic wig care products which you need to purchase like shampoo, conditioner and hairspray. Use only these products, while washing or styling your wig.

Washing
  • Before washing the wig, you will have to untangle it. Take out all tangles with your fingers. Use a wire brush to brush for the job. Do not use any other brush as it could spoil your wig.
  • Fill a bowl large enough to hold the wig with cool water and put one teaspoon of specified shampoo in it. Do not use warm or hot water, as it could damage it.
  • Keep the wig in this bowl for a minute and see whether it has soaked the contents in the bowl. In case it hasn't, let the wig stay in the bowl for some more time.
  • Remove the wig and keep it under flowing water in the basin and wash it thoroughly.
  • Once washed properly, squeeze it gently and get rid of all excess water. Don't be harsh while squeezing to avoid damage.
  • Use a towel to dry it completely.
  • Place it on the stand till it loses all moisture and becomes totally dry. This is essential as you cannot style a wig which is wet.
Styling
  • Styling involves combing or brushing the wig. For this, untangle using your fingers and then use a proper wig brush to comb it.
  • Use T-pins to pin the wig on the stand and then start with the combing.
  • Use rolling papers and apply settling lotion on it, after you have combed the wig. Leave the wig in this manner on the wig stand for a minimum of 24 hours.
  • After it has completely dried, take it out and style it as you desire.
Storing
  • Whenever you store your wig, ensure that you store it with the hair net on. This will minimize tangling.
  • For longer wigs, tuck the end part of the tail carefully inside the hair net while storing.
  • To prevent any dust from settling on your wig, cover it with a scarf, whenever you leave it on the wig stand.
  • Another way to store wigs is by turning them inside out, placing a cap on the outside and keeping it in a plastic bag.
Wig Care Tips
  • Wig fibers tend to get damaged when exposed to high temperatures. Avoid this and protect wig fibers from getting damaged.
  • Style or brush your wig only when it is dry.
  • A lot of people do get tempted and try to use blow dryers, curling irons or hot rollers on synthetic wigs. This is a very bad idea as excess heat will destroy the wig.
  • Only specifically designed products are to be used while washing or styling the wig. This helps in maintaining the natural look of the wig for a longer time.
  • Never rinse, bleach or color your synthetic wig.
  • Store your wig only on a proper wig stand or if you do not have one, place it on any vertical cylindrical shaped items like spray cans or bottles.
  • Avoid washing your wig very often. Ideally, it should be washed after you have worn it for about 15 to 20 times.
Use the above mentioned instructions to see the difference by yourself. Try giving a new style to your wig everyday to keep experimenting with your looks.
