Causes of Swollen Eyelid
- The most common swollen eyelid cause is bacteria and viruses. This condition of bacteria or viruses affecting the eyelid is referred to as blepharitis. Staph bacteria gives rise to white or red cyst on the eyelid.
- Other than the above mentioned cause, poor hygiene, contact with dirty things, usage of expired cosmetics, rubbing eyes with dirty hands and keeping eye makeup on the eyes overnight are a few swollen eyelid causes.
- In some cases, face wash, face cleanser and soap can be a cause of swollen eyelid.
- If there occurs blockage of glands in the eyelid, then it can lead to swollen eyelid.
- Sinus problems are a major result of swollen eyelid. Since, excess fluid is present in the sinus cavity, it might result in swollen eyelid.
- The blockage of lacrimal sac which is present inside the corner of the eye might be a swollen eyelid cause. This condition of blockage of lacrimal sac is referred to as dacryocystitis. The bacteria present in the sac causes the infection. Infants are more prone to this kind of infection.
- When the tissues present under the skin swell, then it might give rise to a swollen eyelid. This condition is referred to as angioedema. Consumption of unwanted food can trigger swelling of tissues thus being a reason for swollen eyelid.
- Blockage of oil glands in the eyelid can be a swollen eyelid cause.
- Dandruff and rosacea are also a reason of swollen eyelids. Painful swollen eyelid can be kept away by having a control over dandruff.
You can opt for an ointment or an antibiotic cream for curing this eye problem. If the swelling is severe and it is causing discomfort, then you can opt for eye drops. If it is due to dandruff, then take measures to reduce the dandruff which will automatically reduce the swelling and will also avoid its re-occurrence. Warm or cold compresser can be used for swollen eyelid treatment. For a swollen eyelid, you can also use baby shampoo. Dilute the shampoo by adding some amount of water to it and then soak a cotton ball in this solution. Dab this cotton ball on the swollen eyelid. This will surely give you some relief from the swelling. Applying strained liquid from grated potato to the infected area will reduce the swelling to some extent.
