The largest of the five Nordic countries, Kingdom of Sweden forms part of Scandinavia in northwestern Europe. It is long and narrow, with a maximum north-south extent of 1,574 km (978 mi.) and a maximum east-west extent of 499 km (310 mi.). Sweden shares a long land frontier with Norway. Finland, the Gulf of Bothnia, the Baltic Sea, and Denmark. The Baltic Sea islands are integral parts of Sweden. Rich in iron ores and forest resources, Sweden is an advanced industrial nation with a high standard of living. The Swedish name, Sverige, comes from Svearike, meaning the kingdom of the Svear.
