The Sutra of No Self/The Buddha
"What am I?" is a basic question in Zen practice. In the Sutra of No Self, which was given at the deer-park soon after his enlightenment, Gutama the Buddha is disscusing this matter.
He thus addressed the first group of five:
The body is not the true self,
Since it is not possible for anyone
To tell their body to be like this or to be like that.
If the body was our true self,
We would not allow it to lend itself to disease;
So it is impossible to say that the body is our true self.
The mind is not the real self,
Since it is not possible for anyone
To tell their mind to be like this or to be like that.
If the mind was the self,
We would not allow it to lend itself to disease;
So it impossible to say about the mind that it is our true self.
The feelings are not the true self,
Since it is not possible for anyone
To tell their feelings to be like this or to be like that.
If the feelings were the self,
We would not allow them to lend themselves to disease;
So it is impossible to say about the feelings
That they are our true self.
If all of these are not my true self,
Then who am I?
In Searching for the real,
The good seeker should not look for it in the body,
Not in the feelings,
Nor in the mind.
Awakening will make you calm;
Through no-differentiating you will be released.
With letting go comes the great knowledge,
And the task can be done.
Glad at heart,
The first group of five monks delighted at His words;
And while this explanation was being given,
Their hearts were released from much unnecessary burden.
