Surgeons are physicians who make incisions on the body, to relieve the patient from the respective health problem. Some surgeons specialize in operating a certain body part, and are called specialized surgeons. A general surgeon is the one who can perform different types of operations, but does not take part in complicated operations which consist of operating on heart and brain. A general surgeon usually operates on the abdominal parts and performs operations related to hernia and appendicitis. Neurosurgeon, Orthopedic surgeon, Plastic surgeon, etc., are some of the surgeons who have specialized knowledge related to their field. Each of these specialized surgeon is an expert in operating the respective parts of the body.
An orthopedic surgeon is an expert at performing operations related to bones, joints, spine, etc. While a neurosurgeon surgeon operates on brain and spinal cord. Neurosurgeons are some of the highest paid surgeons, since, the complications related to the nervous system are very delicate to handle. Plastic surgeons are also in great demand these days. They perform various types of cosmetic surgeries which include, liposuction, treating skin burns, etc. Even these surgeons are among the highest paid surgeons. Ophthalmologists are specialized surgeons for eyes. ENT surgeons, Pediatric surgeons, Thoracic surgeon, etc., are some more types of surgeons. As mentioned earlier, each of these surgeons operate on different parts of body and hence, their responsibilities are a bit different from each other. Job Description of a Surgeon
To become a surgeon, one has to study rigorously in a medical school, for a minimum of 6-8 years. Before obtaining the surgical education, one must obtain a degree of doctor in medicine. Students who want to specialize in certain field, need to obtain the required education. Given below are some of the important job duties of a surgeon.
- Learn the medical history of the patient, make sure if the patient has certain allergies, foresee the results, expected after the operation.
- Depending up on the study of the physical condition of a patient, the surgeon has to decide which procedure should be followed to operate.
- Before starting with the surgery, a surgeon should make sure that the operation theater is well equipped with surgical instruments required for the surgery.
- The surgeon should provide all the information and risks associated with the surgery to the patient.
- The surgeon should manage, plan and schedule the surgery, after studying the physical condition of the patient.
- After completion of the surgery, the surgeon should prepare the case history and provide all the necessary after surgery care to the patient.
