Surfing the Web: Hi, I'm Brent (Chapter 3)
Kelsey ends up on a digital beach but there's a cute boy so who cares what some crazy person warns her about? (I'm so sorry for putting this up so much later than my first two chapters)
It was actually pretty magical. It was like I was swimming in a pool of tropical colors. The green shorts and white tank I had on for pajamas were now gone. In their place was a bright pink and yellow flowing sundress to my knees and white flip-flops.
It was like a dream. I didn’t actually get sucked into my computer, I thought, I just fell asleep and am dreaming. That is why landing surprised me.
I opened my eyes but closed them soon after. It was blinding bright. I squinted adjusting my eyes to the sunny surrounding. The first thing I saw was the ocean. I could just barely hear the waves and taste the salt. Then I inhaled something sweet-smelling. A boy’s cologne?
I turned around and saw him. What a sight! He had dirty blond hair and blue eyes I could drown in. And, oh, was he strong! I bet he had a 6-pack under his white tank which he paired with blue swim shorts. It looked like he was about my age. He reminded me of a boy in my old summer camp. All the girls loved him, including me. Then at the end, when everyone was leaving camp and going home, we found out he already had a girlfriend. Let’s hope this one didn’t have a girlfriend- Oh, what am I thinking? This is a guy from my computer! I think.
"Hi, my name is Brent." He said, showing a smile full of pearly white teeth, and extended his hand.
"Kelsey." I said and shook his hand. "Where am I?"
He let out a soft cute chuckle which made me almost melt into a big puddle. "This is The Surfing Paradise. You must be new. Let me give you a tour." He grabbed my hand and start walking.
The first stop was the Surf Shack which was just like the one at home but three times bigger. You could get surfing equipment, food and drinks there. We both ordered a chocolate milkshake (hold the whipped cream) to go.
We arrived at a small diner. There were huge windows covering the walls so you could see inside it. I could see many teens talking and eating and laughing. Who wouldn’t want to go in? Brent granted my wishes by saying, "We’ll go in here for a few minutes."
We walked in and were immediately bombarded with ‘hello’s. "Everyone may I have your attention. This is Kelsey." He said pointing at me. "She’s a newbie."
A perky young blonde skipped up. "Hi, I’m Shelley! It’s so very nice to meet you. Here, have this hotdog." She practically threw it at me before I could answer. She gave me a serious look before skipping away.
Brent led me to a table where a teen brunette girl with lots of jewelry and redhead guy whose head was in a book sat. "Kelsey, meet Clara and Matt. Clara and Matt, meet Kelsey." Matt looked up from his book and gave me a pathetic smile and awkward wave. Clara scooted over and patted on the seat, telling me to sit down. I did what she said.
I unwrapped the foil from the hotdog the girl gave me, but there was no hotdog inside. It was only the foil, and with something written on it inside:
Newbie, take this from me. It may seem like paradise but if you come here too much it’ll become permanent. Leave now!
Crazy, I thought and threw it away. Then I turned back and listened to Clara, "Hello, Kelsey. Welcome to The Surfing Paradise where we have fun, fun, fun in the sun!" A commercial I saw earlier that day sprung into my mind. It was for a cleaning spray. The girl seemed so happy just to have clean tiles. Clara had the same exact phony smile.
"Thanks." I mumble. "But how did I get here?"
"I’m guessing you downloaded it on your computer?"
"Well, yeah, I did, but there is no way I got sucked into my computer!" My voice started rising. "Is this a dream? A practical joke? Because I just want to- Ow!"
"I only pinched you to show that this is no dream. It’s as real as you and me." Clara patted my shoulder reassuringly.
Could this really be true? I mean, is it possible for a person to be sucked into a computer program? Even how illogical the thought seemed, this felt so real. I just wanted to be back in my own home, this was too confusing. I took many deep breaths before whispering, "I want to go home please."
"Ok, if you wish." Brent said and grabbed my hand again. We walked out of the diner and onto the beach by a palm tree where a sandcastle staircase wound up it. He pointed his finger up. I stood where he was and looked where he was pointing. It looked like a magical portal from a sci-fi movie. On one of the leaves a hole sat spitting out colors and lights.
"That’s your way out. Just climb up the stairs and jump in the portal. Please come back soon. Any time! Doesn’t matter if it’s night or day in your world, it’s always day here. And I can teach you how to surf if you want. All you have to do is click on the surfboard picture on your desktop." Brent instructed me. I started climbing up the sand castle, which was as firm as metal, and jumped in.
The experience was the same as getting there but this time I landed in my desk chair at home.
